    Winch recommendations

Am looking for some sort of winch setup for "emergency" use for the side by side. Have a wee trip planned early July to a spot that has reasonable access but don't want to end up in the shit 20k from any reception. The sxs is my normal farm one and don't really want to permanently mount something. Looking for something reasonably cheap (might never be used) that can be attached like a tow rope. 12v would be good but hand rachet type might suit the budget better

    Cheers

If you don't mind a bit of fluffing around setting it up, a normal ATV winch can be set up on a portable mounting plate with two slings on the back to hook to the machine. Then a fairly robust anderson type plug or means to get power and away you go. The benefit is you can winch from both ends - so you don't end up in the situation of having to pull further into the shite to get yourself out.

I've been meaning to set one up for my ute as the last one I built with a mate - bloody good setup the only thing in bigger rated winches is that you need to go narrow drum and they are a little more pricey and not so common.

My advice, get one mounted for it youll never regret it.
Ive had one for years, swap them over at trade time, there very easy to fit.
I wouldnt use/buy a sxs without one these days.
Last years wet winter it got used weekly, saves long walks.
I carry a 50 meter winch extension rope but hardly use it, have a ground anchor mounted on the deck that doesnt get in the way.
Where are you in the country? I have a couple of spare winches id sell cheap.

    Am near Cambridge.

Should have had a better look on trademe. Seemed to only be 2 options when I "looked" yesterday, now there are hundreds and Facebook must have been listening because I've been getting plenty of ads there as well

I’m with Duncan on this one. You never hear of people removing a winch from thier ute or side by side. The convenience of a permanently mounted winch is so good. And I’ve used my front mounted winches to pull me backwards numerous times. With a pulley/shackles and a few straps, you can get it done easy.

I seen something similarto that the other day, front bull bar mounted reese hayman hitch, 350mm or so long solid steel bar with pully mounted , the pin holes in the hitch bar so you could set to pull left, right, up or under, bloody innovative idea actually.
He must have been stuck a few times Id say

Wire strainer and long chain works well on the Quad. Would probably be ok on a lighter side by side.

now I have only ever seen one advertised but I thought the concept was great and simple - it was a small drum one put onto a wheel of quad or side by side using several of the normal wheel nuts a strap around the drum onto an anchor and put into gear and movement - now in theory one could use any wheel that seemed suitable for the pull and it was dead simple and would not take up any room - sometimes one only has to move a few feet foward or backwoods to get out - any one used one or seen one

In the 1970's that's what I used to get my Suzuki Jimney out of the shit. Bought 10 foot of the same high tensile chain and used that. Through a snatch block it was reasonably impressive. But the cost of electric winches today, I'd go that way.

there is another type of self winch for quads that looks promising amazon advertise them so how available here well ?? its a flexible ladder type made of a heavy duty strap - one puts it around the tyre and the lays it out in front or rear of quad and drive along it as it wraps around tyre - simple folds up into a small tote bag and is multi directional

That sounds like a balls up waiting to happen, still stuck but now with a bunch of strapping tangled round a drive wheel.

well maybe not many times one only has to move a few feet to be out once the suction is broken its advantage is that its can go onto any wheel and folds away really small - the problem with a permenent front winch is that the stuck quad can really only go the way the winch is pointing - but a huge advantage of a mounted winch with a ground anchor one can skin deer with them - thats a bonus

Got a runva on the front of the king quad. Have no issues recommending it. Seem good quality all sealed etc with dyneema rope. If its for self recovery don't fuk around with cheap shit.

There's a setup that looks a little like snow chains - one wheel only though and it's got a few metres of solid webbing attached. Basically it rolls the webbing up around the wheel - just enough to get you unstuck. Bit of a pest to set up I'd say but if you had nothing else it would save your bum...
