I got a plain eyed heading dog pup a couple of years ago with the same logic - 'If I can train a gundog to a good standard, I can train a heading dog'. It was a damn sight harder than I thought it would be, that said I didn't have access to a training pen or sheep (Just dairy cows).

I went to a training day with Anna Holland which really helped.

Personally I would get a huntaway - heading dogs are too highly strung.

    Hope that helps

I would have to agree a semi retired huntaway where he has been there done that. He will show you the ropes on stock work.

7 suggestion would be the best idea picking up a retied dog ,wont be easy though most of the semi retied dog's go to young fullas just starting out ,or end up yard dogs just used to bark up .you will have your work cut out for ya if youv'e not sure how to start a young Hunter way ,they dont mind charging if you dont have the stop on them, if your moving a hand full of heifers - nek minut dog at the vet lol

Getting a GOOD semi- retired dog is hard , I would rather have no dog than one that fucks up all the time - been there done that . I agree young hunterways maybe TOO willing for moving stock occasionally they need and thrive on continual working and preferably with a older experienced dog. One other thing ,definatly get a bitch they mature far earlier . Cheers

Used a retired hill contry huntaway on a dairy farm he was excellent with dairy cows and young stock, where the right placement and a good bark got the stock moving

and after more looking i recon im after a heading dog, as i would need it to single out sheep and even hold one if possible ,, heading dog would bring more to the table im thinking , more fun to train to
