    Muzzle Station

Hi guys, a mate is in the process of organizing a hunting trip into Muzzle Station on the Clarence river, Central Canterbury. Apparently we are going into a DOC hut which is accessed through Muzzle Station
Its an area which is total new to me so just wondering if anyone can offer a bit of insight into the area in general. Thanks.

If you’re staying in a doc hut I’d suspect you’ll be going in from the inland kaikoura road into doc Clarence reserve area. Southern side of Clarence river. Huts on the northern, muzzle station, side are private station huts. If you are going on muzzle stn side you’ll go in thru bluff station. Either way bad weather can make it a no go. Flooded creeks/ washed out crossings on muzzle side. Same on Clarence reserve side plus track can be treacherous when wet. Carry chains anyway.

Yeah, sounds like the Clarence Reserve part of Muzzle as woods223 said, via Blind Saddle etc. Should see a goat or 100 and a few pigs.

Yes I think we will be going in on the Kaikoura inland road, then through a locked gate. Leaving the vehicle there and taking the SxS's.

Go downstream from Quail flat and hunt up behind the limesone ck. Always a deer or pig floating round.
Or upstream to the Palmer hut and accidentally walk across the Clarence onto Molesworth. You're underneath the Dillon cone and all those faces hold deer and Chams

Awesome track over Blind Saddle, lots of great views along the way before you hit the creek.

Awesome spot alright - no room for any slip-ups on that track over the saddle though

Nope The Reserve and The Muzzle no where near Central Canty.Straddles the North Canty /South Marlborough boundary.A good 100 miles north of Central Canty.
A heavy snow dump forecast early next week will block the Blind Saddle. And once it thaws the tracks will turn to porridge.Carry a full set of chains for all vehicles and recovery gear. Its a fear walk out to the road end if you mess it up

Great feedback thanks guys. Sounds like an awesome place but watch the weather and the track conditions.

Take plenty of fuel with you. It's about 27 km's into Quail Flat from gate and SXS's aren't the most economical to run as a rule. Make sure you've got good tyres fitted, the clay in there sticks like shit and builds up on everything when wet. Don't know when you're going in but be aware that if there's been or forecast weather like for the next few day's you may not get a key issued. That track can be unpleasant at times. Even a pivot steer John Deere fitted with chains can struggle. If you do get in you should do alright, plenty of animals in there if you put the work in. Good luck.
