Identi Target Perfect Score Challenge 1st May 2016


Where: North Auckland Deerstalkers

848 Coatesville-Riverhead Hwy, Riverhead, Auckland

SHOOT:

This competition is a hunting simulation shoot, that will test the abilities of shooters and hunters in various shooting positions and at various distances.

Targets:

Any of the 7 Identi targets (Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Sika Deer, Wild Pig, Chamois, Thar, Sambar)

Two targets per competitor will be used, one for 200m and 150m, another one for 100m,50m and 25m)

Equipment:

Shooting mat, knee roll, Bipod is Allowed

Any caliber centre fire rifle up to 8mm, without muzzle breaks

Course of fire:

All standard Deer Stalker range rules will apply

200m - 5 shots from Prone position, Bi-pod allowed, no rear support, 2 min preparation time, 5 minutes shooting time

150m - 5 shots from Kneeling position, Knee roll allowed, no slings or gloves, 2 min preparation time, 5 minutes shooting time.

100m - 5 shots from Sitting position, no external support, 2 min preparation time, 5 minutes shooting time.

50m - 5 Shots from Standing position, no external support, 2 min preparation time.

25m - 5 shots rapid fire, 30 seconds preparation time, start rifle pointing on 45degrees and loaded. 3 sec per shot on the blow of whistle.

Scoring:

25 shots Total, Maximum score is 750

Outward edge scoring for the actual calibre shot.

If there is more than the allocated shots on the target the highest counting score will be deducted.

Prizes:

Full score on the day will win $500 prize money in cash on the day

Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and Lucky draw prizes

There will be a prize for winner in each of the 5 disciplines

The top 10 shooters of this event will be invited to a $20 000 Perfect score event later in this year at a venue still to be announced.

Easy shooting easy money

Hi Hennie, sounds like an interesting shoot, rather similar to the Taupo Big Balls but on targets without visible score lines. Not what I would call easy.

I see one position is "bipod allowed". Is a pack / sandbag OK ? Would you have to leave the bipod attached for all stages ?
5 shots in 15 sec is pretty hard with a bolt action, specially as most hunting rifles only take 3 or 4 shots !
Can you tell us what sort of size the scoring ring/zones are ? Most centerfire shoots are inward gauging with 8mm but this shoot with outward gauge using the bullet diameter would give an advantage to .22 cal if the score zones were at all smallish. Is there a special high scoring headshot zone or something ?
I know you're a top marksman yourself; have you seen anyone close to a perfect score on this sort of shoot ?

Shot placement is the key factor for this comp, a hunter that wants to be more competitive, but your gear is keeping you back. Good news you don't need expensive high-tech gear.
Yes. A pack /bag will be allowed but not a bench type front rest -any type of front rest that you will use for hunting is good.
the 15 sec 5 shot let me explain this is a 25 meter snap shot discipline 30 sec prep time the whistle will blow and you have 3 sec to shoot a single shot whistle will blow again to stop and will repeat.
2 kill zones 1 at the hart lung area 30 points (60mm) and 1 in the head 30.1 points (60x110mm). This size allow for factory ammo as well to be very competitive.
No advantages on caliber
Yes this type off shooting was perfected lots of times starting from the 300m mark. Because New Zealand shooting ranges is limited with distance we changed it to start at 200m with a snap shot at 25 m

I see the prone as doable, the sitting as difficult but doable, the standing as definitely doable and the snap as doable - it is the unsupported kneeling at 150m that I think a lot of competitors will seriously struggle with. With the size of the maximum point zone it is equivalent to shooting all 9s and 10s on a standard NZDA metric 100m target. I know I don't have the shooting skill to be able to do this and many of our top NZDA shooters in NZ can't do this consistently with their target rifles, jackets and slings.

"Snap shooting" in a hunting context might not be the best option considering how many people are shot in exactly that way every year...

I think that's OK for time without reloading but for me it will be a challenge to even get them all in the 25 score zone !
Without going into a full safety debate, I think in quite a few hunting situations a deer has been solidly identified and a quick shot can safely be taken. Practice on the range should be more difficult than what you need to put a deer on the deck. "Train hard, hunt easy".

Given that we presumably can't see the blue score rings through the scope, there will of course be some debate about what placement would have been a satisfactory clean kill but there you go, we're not shooting at round red targets are we ? Familiarity with the targets up close may be an advantage. I've run indoor shoots at deer / chamois / rat pictures without score rings and just let the shooters score for themselves how many shots they think were "good".

I agree with Gillie's assessment of doableness for perfect score - the kneeling would be the hardest. But luck will favour those well prepared.

By the way, are there any penalty zones for bad placement like gut shot or jaw shot ?

That will be the key factor shot placement. if you want to win this you will need to know where to aim
yes a bad shot will earn you -15

@Gillie you're a top shot why would kneeling bother you. New Zealand has a very Olimpic like (3p) shooting style and kneeling is part of that ....

@ebf maybe this is just what hunters need to shoot at animal targets instead of rounds.

@Hennie260 - I am not a top shot, I would consider myself reasonable at best. And based on a bunch of 4p shoots I have done over 20 years and having my best 5 shot kneeling score at 100m come in at about 44/50 I am realistic about my own skill with my rifles and equipment. Maybe if I was practicing a lot more than I do (I shoot competitions but I rarely practice in between).

Hennie, I was going by your placing in the Tarata medium range precision shoot.
I will disclose that Gillie and I have each won the Big Balls shoot (in different years) and, speaking for myself, three or 4 guys in Hamilton outshoot me every fortnight at indoor 4P so I'm pretty average there - I only got a placing because none of them chose to go to Taupo that day. So, there are a number of "Top Marksmen" who aren't travelling to many of these shoots and if you can get several of them out to yours, that will be great.
I'm not sure whether a big all or nothing cash prize will bring them in but the single snap shots and photo animal targets with gut shot negative score will make it an interesting "bit different" challenge for everyone.

@Bagheera at the end of the day there will also be prizes for winners in different categories and lucky draws, and if a person has a good day and get the perfect score you will receive the $500.
New Zealand in general sees long range shooting as the ultimate. The majority of hunters don’t do long distance hence this competition. No expensive gear necessary just a reasonable accurate rifle and a steady hand. Shooting these deer targets is way more realistic and fun than those round red targets.
The plan is to take this comp to other regions so people don’t have to travel that far
I hope all the top marksman out there take note of this comp and join us for some shooting then.
