Thread: 50L ish Packpacks

Hey guys

On the lookout for a new day bag.

I have tried a bunch but can't find something that ticks all the boxers.

I currently have an Osprey 48L it's awesome until I pack it with meat.
tried hanging the meat from the hydration hook it just sits badly and pulls down on my shoulders, Same issue with a spotting scope or rifle strapped to it.

Currently looking at some of the other Ospray packs and a few Mystery ranch packs with a frame set up but open to other suggestions before the credit card takes a hiding.

I've gone Eberlestock F1 frame system so you only change the size of the bag you want and the frame stays. Works mint for backpack hunting so you can drop the main bag and go light with the frame and batwing bags for the day.

Macpac. Like Ed Hillary. Bomb proof.

Went through the same thing when my macpac weka got chewed by my pup mate. Got recommended the cactus by quite a few but bugger me they are expensive. I ended up with a Tatonka Norix 48L and it’s been great. I’ve had two boned out reds in it which pushed it to the limit but it did well. Carries a load way better then macpac did. You can get them with a stealth outer fabric now too if you want them to be quieter in the bush.

I went a 45L MR frame pack. A sawtooth that was a deal somewhere. I quite like the load shelf and the bit extra in weight is neither here nor there.

I’ve also used my new Kuiu system a handful of times now and loving the LT 4000 for a day or overnight bag. The meat shelf is bloody awesome and the easy access into the 4000 bag is mint. If I was bush stalking then I would find the harness system and height of the frame a little annoying and use the Tatonka instead but anything open country or slip hunting it’s the bees knees. Expensive though..

Im not much of a bush hunter just travel through to get to look outs.
I think something with a meat shelf will be mint plus could stash the spotter and sleeping bag etc in there if needed.

Will keep what i have for smaller missions but need something to fit the gap between that and my 85L Osprey bit over kill for an overnighter.

Regarding the meat shelf, does that sit between the pack and your body? If so won't your body heat affect the meat?

Yes but you still have the frame between your back and the meat. I wouldn’t think it’s any worse then the meat being crammed and sealed inside the bag.

Have the mystery ranch bloody awesome pack. Tried all sorts and this really is good

Have a look at Akek packs. I just got their bigger model but they do a 3200 (52L). Very well made and thought out design. They get very good reviews. Can only buy from the USA but mine arrived in a week. Shipping was about $70 though.
