Add, Subtract or Upgrade my daypack contents

Im looking for some feedback on whether this is too much gear for a dayhunt.

In the day bag:

Sunhat
Raincoat
Mutton cloth
Binoculars
Saw
Instep crampons

Socks
Polyester thermal base layer

Roll of insulation tape.


In the Mesh bag:

Esbit cooker and cup

Hexamine fuel tabs
Lighter

In the plastic zip lock bag:
An israeli bandage type wound dressing
2 squirts of saline
Roll of insulation tape

On my to buy list is a PLB and a better first aid kit.

In my belt I carry knife, steel, leatherman multitool, compass, candle, lighter and signal mirror.

What I will be walking in with, all packed up minus water. I dont eat during the day.

Thinking of dropping the bipod off the rifle.

There are a few double ups there and I assume things a like saw and crampons are only in there when you are hunting certain areas?

Given the amount of soft gear in the pack you could use that instead of the bipod

Yeah, this is for a block about 3/4 pine plantation and 1/4 beech forest Im hopefully hitting next week. The crampons are chucked on when I get in there as there is alot of deadfall and it makes it easier if the logs are wet.

Yeah I think I should cull some stuff out. If Im wearing a merino baselayer that will still be warm when wet so that probally negates carry extra thermals abd maybe socks for that matter.

Personally I don't bother with cooker etc for day trips, still have a lighter in the safety kit though. I don't take a saw either.

On the flipside I always take food and water in case I end up out there for longer than expected.

If you're somewhere high, steep and cold enough that you might need the crampons then I'd also have a beanie or polypro balaclava, and probably sunglasses for the snow.

EDIT: Ahh now I read the part about the crampons being for wet logs etc, skip that last part.

True, Im sure I can go without my 1pm coffee break.

When you get a PLB, don't put it in the day pack. Wear it on your belt or some other way attached to YOU.

Ditch the steel or get a better knife and ditch the steel.
Ditch the saw.
Ditch the cooker

And probably the leatherman too

There's too much stuff there to go through individually and cut. It looks more like a few days list and still stuff i'd cut for that. I'd suggest the following - lay everything out on a large open floor space. Then select the things you absolutely need and put them to one side. I'm talking things like rifle, ammo, knife. Things that aren't optional.

Then start adding a few optional things. You say you don't even eat, so you could get down to the really bare minimals. If I didn't eat then my list would be something like this:

Rifle
Ammo
Knife
Rangefinder (serves as Bino's also)
Phone & Backup charger which can also charge torch (phone serves as GPS also)
Bipod
Jacket (extra to the clothes I would wear)
Water (not much - I go where I can get it as I go and use purification tabs from first-aid kit just to be safe)
First Aid Kit
PLB
Plastic bags (for meat)
Paracord
Mini Lighter & Tyre Rubber (for emergency, only weighs a few grams)
Torch (for walking out late - I always stay too long)

And the last 3 are debatable too.

For clothes I wear what i'll need except a jacket. Maybe take a polar fleece undershirt or something in the pack too, but i normally leave extra stuff like that in the car.

I'm no experienced day-tripper - only done a few. But you shouldn't need anywhere near what you're taking along. And as for taking the Johnnie on a day trip that's an interesting choice if you're going to be shooting... All for taking something on a trip of a few days to have at the end of a hard day.

Lighter
Candle stub
First aid kit
Pull through
Binoculars
Insulation tape for muzzle

Im used to just hunting from the vehicle when we had been pruning to the trees but now Ill be walking in.

if the candle stub is for lighting fires I'd be inclined to leave one of the hexi blocks in instead, just wrap it in gladwrap so the smell doesn't go through the pack.

The other thing I would add is that if you're happy carrying the extra stuff then you don't have to cut it down as much as possible - it doesn't weigh that much or cause you to need a bigger pack, and especially for anything safety related I reckon you're better carrying a bit of extra stuff and not needing it than leaving something out and then thinking bugger, that would have been useful.

I take a lot more gear for a full day than if its just a few hours in the morning, because I'll be a lot further from the car or help if something goes wrong.

I would ditch the big sheath knife and take a small folding one. I use a svord pheasant knife but there are many good choices. If you are taking a leatherman you don't need the saw or ditch the leatherman and keep the saw.

It's worth weighing everything and putting it all in a spreadsheet then trying to find lighter versions of all the heavy items.

You can do a lot better than Johnny walker. Get a real single malt of liquorcabnet.co.nz our whiskyandmore.co.nz and take what you need in a small plastic bottle. I assume it's for celebrating after you shoot the stag not before...

Don't skimp on the thermals, raincoat, touch and food. Plan to spend a unexpected night out because you still at some stage.

Always has whisky or brandy in the first aid kits growing up, Im not a fan of drinking it personally, Id rather have a chocolate milk, haha.

It doesn't matter what you cull out of your pack, because as soon as your out there your going to say.... I whish I brought my saw, coffee, steel or something. It's like cleaning out the garage, soon as you bring your self around to throwing some thing out because you don't use it any more a month later your out there looking for it and you realize........F##k it!

That's the truth!

Mine; ten bullets, two knives, gps on belt, two apples, two bananas, musli bar x2 spare rain coat in camelback, 2L of water in camelback and 5 bags. Binos or rangefinder depends on where I'm off to.
Always have xtra food in ute and another 2L of water.
In my knife pouch I always have insulation tape, leather man, string, torch and long wrap around pressure bandages.
A PLB is my next big purchase as it's normally on these smaller/easy missions that things go awry.

The Grandfather would always nock back a whiskey if he wasn't well, in saying that he also used to put vicks 44 stuff on his tongue....thought it worked quicker.

I always feel like a retard when I open these threads.

I hardly ever take a bag. A pocket knife (in my pocket) :ORLY: and a light in the other pocket sometimes I take a jacket if I think it's going to rain.

Just been cleaning out and drying my gear in the day pack. Permits had expired,but we got drowned on private land yesty.So just upgraded them.
One moro bar at the bottom of my pack had melted,not from last night trip though.All my gear will be in a rubbish bag from now inside the pack.
And a raincoat is on the buy list.

I took my macpac resolution out in the storm to watch the lightning, stayed dry and didnt feel clammy. Theyre 40% off at the moment and roll up to the size of a balled up pair of woollen socks.

Unless i'm going somewhere i've never been and plan on doing a huge explore. A cooker on a day trip, two knives, spare clothes etc is ridiculous imo.

If im going on a day trip and no where im going and have looked at the weather forcast it is:
Bino's in my bino pouch which have built in rangefinder, gps clipped on and phone in there and small knife/leatherman
Few spare rounds
Maybe some paracord if its still in a little pocket somewhere
A small backpack with an empty bottle, a pillow case, couple of tins of tuna, a leesnack or chocolate/muesli bar etc and a raincoat if there is chance of rain or a fleece if its just going to be windy.

What do people actually have in there first aid kit? Like what are you actually going to achieve with one???

I have, anti histamine (wasps),pain killers,anti inflamitorys(sprains etc). and insulation tape (gapeing holes etc)

I just found my old first aid kit I had on my chainsaw chaps it has in it:

Large sterile first aid dressing 180x180
70x50 wound pad
Vinyl gloves
Wide open weave bandage 50mmx4m
Resuscitation face shield
2x wound cleansing wipes

Stuff I think I added after:
Bent needle and nylon thread (nothing else will do if you cut your palm open)
4x panadol
4x Zyrtec(I dont actually know what that is)
Tube of savlon.
Insulation tape.
