after restoring a lot of garden gear for my dear daughter - an old dear asked if I could do her old hedge trimmers - now they are old and english - been good quality once - but abused- one blade to me looks bent with a slight bow in it - firstly were any made like that in order to get the blades meshing together ?? - if not how would one try to straighten the blade - they feel like a good quality steel ??- heat and our press at work maybe - doubt a hammer will do it - any ideas out there
I’ve seen some that appeared to have a deliberate bow, almost sprung to keep tension on the cut.
If you open and close them very slowly while watching the moving cut point, if both blades stay in constant contact there then I wouldn’t try to alter them.
A good sharpen whilst maintaining the cutting edge angle is probably enough. Flat the back of the blade to get rid of any burrs , lube the pivot point and test run them to see they do cut.
The slight bow in one blade is indeed designed to keep the cutting faces in constant tension and contact.

hey huge vote of thanks guys - yes I had in the back of my mind the slight bow may have been normal - when one closed them the blades did indeed maintain close contact - I shall sharpen and restore - I could not see how one got bent - I have done her old edge trimmer and it now works great - and got a small sprayer from another to fix - that one I do know something about
