Advice wanted: best active in-ear hearing protection

I'm looking for advice for my son. He's in the army, so he needs to listen to commands, and have hearing protection from shooting at the same time. Ear muffs are out of the question because he also wears a helmet. A recent event meant he couldn't hear instructions and took a foam plug halfway out, and had tinnitus afterwards. I have that and would like to help him avoid it if at all possible.

What in-ear protection do you use that effectively cuts loud noise (>80dB) but let's speech and ambient noise through?

I got some custom made stuff Variphone.

Its got a filter and noice reduction can be set by the technician on issue. An injection mould is made of your inner ear, after which the L and R ear pieces are manufactured and supplied.

Can clean them in a sonic cleaner.

Dont know if they are available in NZ though.

Dankie maat! I'll look them up on the internet and see if they have local suppliers.

Meantime peltor do a set of in ear electronic earplugs, they also do behind the ear slim top electronic earmuffs with a soft strap that goes over the top of the head. There are several solutions that might work, but depending on his situation in the army (basic training etc) he should be able to access them through supply?

If he can talk to his boss and or medical parade types they might be able to assist...

I got some threw bay audiology work great but can wissel when the wind hits them on a particular angle

In the SA army, the corporal's voice was always louder than the firing! If not, they would clap your staaldak hard enough to make your ears ring for days.

Mine's been ringing for years......to many live fire exercises I guess.

I have some custom silicone earplugs with filters in them. I had them made in Canada but talked to an audiologist here and they can make them here too.
I used them when I was building and could hear conversations but would lower the frequency of loud noises. I even use them for surfing these days too. Check these out.

Yep, that's the problem here too!

I have some axil ghost electronic ear plugs, can turn up surround but cuts gun shots. Going to sell them for $125 (RRP 250)
These are wicked but I prefer my electronic earmuffs
