Some good advice above. Also consider the tread pattern. I have some very good European "mountain boots" for another recreation I enjoy and they have a flat area at the toe for smearing on rock - 4th and 5th class death if you fall type climbing.
However, they are no good in the NZ bush or out on the tops where things get damp and slippery. Some boots I have specifically designated for NZ are the Hanwag Alaska GTX and Lowa Hunter or Lowa Ranger. Yes, kind of pricey but they will make or break a hunting trip.
