Thread: Benchmade knives

I managed to loose my little Manly Companion knife was couple of weeks back, it's somewhere on the floor of the ocean in the Abel Tasman, was turning out to be a great knife so a bit gutted about that!
Anyhow, I put on my best puppy dog face impression and told my other half about how I needed to get a new knife and she has offered to buy me one as a belated birthday present.
I had a benchmade knife a few years back that I also managed to loose before even getting to use it and I wouldn't mind giving one a go again, does anyone use one? Any opinions on them? @Tahr, do you have any experience with these knives?

My brother uses them and I have tried one, very good steel and well made. They are up there with other quality blades, @Tahr will probably have more knowledge of the steel type they use.

Griptillian. Awesome.

Never had one. Only ever had 2 pocket knives in my life.
They have a good reputation and use good stainless steels. AS KJ says, the Griptillian looks nice.

Benchmade are ok, there stuff is expensive because they are made and assembled in the states, so they have to pay actual wages, as for steel type they run the full gamut of mostly to full stainless steels, nothing wrong with them at all, if the states as a place of manufacture is unimportant to you then Zero Tolerance, Spyderco, Kershaw, ESEE etc all are very good knives, some state based others more Asian...
Depends what you want to spend and what you want it to do.

Of course if you want a little full tang knife, as opposed to a folder then I could help out...

I have had a couple,still have a "Skirmish" that knife has replaced a sheath knife for me.

I'm looking at going back to a fixed blade and the steep country hunter catches my attention, like the shape as it seems like it would be good for skinning and butchering

Looks alright.But nothing special to be honest,

This would probably be a bit nicer to own,without being less practical

(370BB) Drop Point 4 3/4 - Svord

I have a Sword knife,dosn't look like they make the model I have any longer,its been good.Used in overseas quite alot and it held an edge well.The Scales (grips ) on the Sword stuff is pretty naff.You could dress them up a bit with a couple of bits off a Totara post or some Kauir like I did.

My advice is to avoid S30V. It can be chippy and a bugger to sharpen. Its improved version is S35VN and that's a much better steel.

The best value hunting knife that I'm aware of at the moment is the Enzo Trapper in Elmax steel. $150 US plus freight. Its at the bottom of this page. Its a nice Loveless style. I've had Enzo before and they are very well made. Their sheaths are great too. Thompson Knives are good to deal with.

An alternative is the second to top knife in N690 which is still a good steel and a bit cheaper.

why not get in touch with @john worthington and get a New Zealand made custom knife. I have 3 of his........well 2 i have to wait a couple more days for the 3rd. But sell these to my clients and the rave about them. Talking with John you can design the whole lot from handle to steel etc. He is south island based also

I would suggest that your better half buys you a roll of valco for your belated birthday so you stop loosing your knives!
