I am looking for something for hunting (with others) and communication between vehicles. Any suggestions?

I have a couple of GME TX6160. Not the cheapest but I’m pretty impressed with the performance.
I can communicate with my son when he is several kilometres upstream in thick bush and he is below the level of a large river escarpment so definitely no line of sight - and I can be inside a corrugated iron clad hut.
We have had our 6160’s for a few years so it is likely they are not the latest model.
The 6160’s are menu switchable between low power (1W) and high power (5w). We’ve only ever used them on high power but only have them switched on at pre-arranged times for a 5 minute interval until contact is made, so have never had an issue with battery life.
We’ve used 5w for years but they’re on their last legs so needed new ones. I bought the 2 watt gme mostly because you can usb charge them so don’t need another battery.m, and they’re a lot smaller. I figured I’d try them and if I noticed they weren’t going as far or as good as the 5w, I’d use them for light duties and get some 5w ones. Haven’t noticed a major difference yet for my style of hunting so haven’t gone back to 5w yet. Generally we’re hunting in the same catchment so don’t really need to go much up and over. The 2w go around corners just as good as the old 5w ones did.
Mine are 2watt and have been great

link didn't say water ip rating but make sure you get a waterproof bag for them.
We've had good luck with GME 2W radios for skiing and moving with groups, battery life is excellent too. Best range was 10km across a lake... they do seem to be able to work fine a little out of line of sight.
Ive got these and the GME 5 watt. The 2 watt are fine for the same catchment, mainly line of sight, back up and pottering. It's what I carry as a spare for people who come hunting with me. They are handy and compact. The 5 watt are bigger, kick arse and will work out of line of sight. I slipped one turned on into my wife's hand bag when she went shopping once. She nearly died when this voice said "it's your bank here, do you think you can afford that!". She was a couple of km away in town. I received a bit of a verbal slapping when she got home![]()
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.

Baofeng all the way, they have a waterproof model too and they cost next to nothing. I load all the PRS/UHF CB channels along with the VHF marine channels so if you are hunting by boat, you can call in the boat when you are wanting to be picked up, etc.
