    Best Value Puffer Vest/Jacket

    Novice question here.

Im looking to head out tomorrow night for a few day hunt andI've noticede a gap in my warm clothes, so I'm thinking ill fill it with a puffer of sorts.

Looking at either the macpac uber light or halo.

Both seem cheap enough. Would the halo do well on a tahr hunt? Im not going tahr hunting, tbh probably dont need the puffer, but its better to be safe.

    Penny for your thoughts...

Hooded Macpac Uber Light is a great affordable down jacket option.

I have used one for years and it's all you need as an added insulation layer for everything except for maybe a mid winter Tahr hunt.

I bought a macpac uber light vest and a halo jacket a few days ago to replace my ancient Macpac vest and damaged jacket. Amazing value in the current sale. The vest would do for moving around if you need warmth. The jacket would be too much if moving but great for glassing/in camp. Both squash down into a tiny ball for your pack.

Was in a similar situation to you a month ago, I took one of the "ultralight" bushbuck puffers into fiordland for 10 days. Super impressed with the features, fit, warmth and build. Can't fault it. Packs down to nothing inside one of it's pockets.

I'm a big fan of the Macpac Uberlight hooded jacket, it packs super small and is great as an additional layer to throw on when glassing or sitting in camp.
Can't remember how much it was on special but it was pretty damn cheap compared to other options

Yup, +1 for the uber light hooded jacket - they get down to $90-ish at times - Easter sale could be a good option. I also got a uber light vest as a second layer that packs down small. Good combo for a range of conditions without too much weight/bulk.

I have the Uber & the Halo, uber packs down way better where your more inclined to take it on trips where space in your pack is premium.

The Halo is bigger and warmer.

If you wanted something in between try the Mercury.

    Current prices are
    Uber $125
    Mercury $139
    Halo $140

Another option is a jacket from Wear on Earth based in Christchurch, great people to deal with who make jackets & sleeping bags.

I just recently purchased a down jacket from them but yet to test it but it’s really well made.

Re Macpac current prices: I paid about $72 for the Halo jacket and about $65 for the Uber vest (the down vest). These are last season's items, less 20% on sale, not the current season half price.

Love my Macpac uber light vest. Got it for like $60 on the specials rack. Always in my kit for autumn and winter trips. Brilliant warmth layer for in the tent or under the rain jacket when glassing. Adds extra warmth to the lightweight puffer jacket I use. And, have to say, gets used in my casual going out gear at home. Need to get one in grey. Check the specials rack at end of season...
