Buying Fishimg and Hunting gear in Alaska/ Canada

    Good afternoon Gents.
I'm heading over for a cruise in July. Is it worthwhile buying fishing/hunting gear over there?

Cabelas and Bas Pro in the US are worth the visit just for the taxidermy alone.

You will be mind-boggled at the selection of fishing gear , let alone hunting and every other sort of outdoors equipment .

    Dont know about Canada

As @fawkes said, Cabelas and Bass Pro are definitely worth a look! But allow yourself plenty of time, at least a full day, hopefully 2, cos there is way to much to see before you start buying. I found the best places to look for decent gear was in the fishing/hunting shops in the towns outside of the major centres. Lots of bargains, and priced about the same as here until you find a bargain, some of the second hand stuff can be an absolute steal.

I shopped REI in US and they have some phenomenal deals esp if you pay $30 and get lifetime member ship - they give you a $30 voucher on the spot.
Scopes - I couldn’t find anything in Nth America that was much cheaper than NZ esp given any GST or duty tax.
Ps - Better to carry goods back into NZ and sea with GST etc. I paid nothing but on a shipped box, customs hammered me with the gst/duty plus all their ‘fees’ which I never knew existed

Canadian Tyre had some pretty good prices on gear 10 years ago when I was there - https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/shop-...DC0002119.html

    +1 for Cabelas too

Good outdoor/hunting/fishing shop in the main drag of Whitehorse. Can't remember the name but would be easy too find.

Look for 'mail-in rebates'. If you are there long enough you can mail an address to get a % off the products you buy.

The reason you see prices about the same there, especially in 'big box' stores (Cabela's, Gander Mountain, Sportsmans Warehouse) is due to RRP pricing. Can't be under-cutting that too much otherwise you lose the distribution rights.

Some smaller outfitters will be way under (or over!) RRP but unlikely to have the very latest stuff.

Just about had a fuck up. Went to book accommodation in Vancouver. I didn't know there was another Vancouver not so far away in the US. I do now.
