I've got a bit of a prototype together for exactly this. Works really well and transfers the weight to the hips nicely. Will build the "good copy" next few days and update here. Makes the Huntaway and awesome 3 day pack

Pretty simple really just bent it up out of 16mm aluminium tubing, hardest part was just getting the bends right and in the right place to make it sit really well. Think I've got it pretty good now, stiffens up the pack really well, pulls the top of the load in and transfers weight down onto the hip belt. I do have some alloy flats and might try riveting a cross bar across the top of the prototype one I made up to see how that goes but I think it might just create too much stiffness and feel like carrying a plank against my back.

The only packs I have seen with a flat on a frame like this have been the really old style units where the padding is made up of a series of laced and tightened flat strips of canvas. All of them with an internal frame of one piece of ali tube are U shaped with either one curve or bend in the legs or pretty much exactly like the one shown above with a curve and a straight section on the end.

I still have a couple here with the internal u shaped frame, works well. That one just up looks mint though, good as any commercial one I've seen.

I have enough alloy here to make a couple more of these if someone wants one, you'd just need to pay for postage (might fit in one of those XXL nzpost bags so probably about $17-$20) I'd put the initial bends in it but you'd have to adjust it to suit you

If you have enough alloy I'd like one too please.
