Thread: Carry in day bags?

What's everyone using as a day bag once you get to your hunting area on walk in fly camp trips?space in main pack is limited but day pack needs to be big enough for a couple of back legs and main cuts from a Sika?i have been using my main pack compressed down or the old school sugar sack pikau,just wondering if there's a better option.

I picked up an exped "cloudburst" for a South Island trip last year. Pretty much a 25l drysack with straps. Weighs 300g and rolls up small.
Might struggle to get back legs in it though.

The verto is taller and thinner and will hold a spotting scope nicely.
Cloudburst is shorter and fatter.

Both are perfect for what you want

the canvas one on front of my K2Hunter works fine...if worried about canvas scratching I just put a fleece t or similar on pack..... current day bag is a big polarfleece sack with seatbelt (long enough for A.Gale carry strap) used as the pikau strap and a tennis ball in each corner (whatever you do dont tell my dog where they went)
the fleece pikau is plurry great as day dag and weighs stuff all. deliberately made it big so everything fits in it good. figure if going to carry animal out whole using strap the bag can tuck inside gut cavity.... as for fitting arse end of sika...... well I fitted 3-4 year old red stag boned out into a daybag that I wouldnt call huge...started out with back wheels intact but saw sense within couple of hundy yards....no point in carrying out tendon and bone just for dog to chew on.

I use a fleece pikau. They work ok. Get sick of all the knot tying getting in and out of the things. By the time you have your lunch a jacket and dayhunt gear, there isnt much space left.

Definitely a market for a better product IMO. The twin needle packs roll up pretty small if you remove the back panel apparently. Could be worth a look.

The huntech 25l look ok too. @Rusky fit 2 boned out sika into his one on our last trip, although my 40l huntech bag shat its pants on the same trip with a boned out stag in it, so might be a gamble

If you don't expect to have too far to walk or too much to carry, this is quite handy. Hunter's Element Weighs 136 grams and with pint of stout as comparison, folds down not too big. Ie very small. Edit: point being you can just put it in your belt bag or pocket or whatever until you need it.

I just tighten the straps up of my main pack and use that

Same. Makes carrying a load of venison comfortable when you have a decent pack, obviously not ideal if your main pack is 90L.

I don't know. I have a couple good day bags but always forget to take the friggen things.
I normally empty everything out of my main pack and use that but it is not ideal.

I do the same. Fine if you are hunting open country. Plenty of room for meat, skins, etc, but yeah, not ideal in the tight stuff.

I still use a huntech 40L daypack fill it with gear and stick it down the guts of a 90L cascade. It is not super light but by the time you stick GPS, EPIRB, food, water, coat, extra top knife, headtorch, ammo, meat bags, bipod etc etc plus have room for meat then a half decent daypack comes into it's own. If you have to cut through any scrub a big pack is pain and noisy. I would like a better daypack and think I will eventually pick up a macpac weka, and maybe cut the weird front pocket off and get twin needle or someone to sew a decent pocket on the front, but it may not be as packable as a huntech which can be folded in half or rolled up. Everyone is different, the concept of carrying any bone off the hill other than a decent head is crazy to me, always bone it out on site, so much weight saved.

I use a Huntech 40lt. It’s big enough for 2 Red Deer back wheels and back steaks and all the other shit I carry.

Yea the main pack is what I use mostly,thick shoulder strap makes shouldering the gun difficult,I only bush hunt and it gets caught up a bit.might try and adapt a old seatbelt as a strap on right side for hunting then use padded one when carrying deer out.

+1 for the Catcus Miklat just brought one after trying a heap of others but I'm yet to use it. Looks perfect will roll up to go in my big pack and one out side pocket.
Only draw back is it may be a bit noisey in the tight stuff, but it looks to be built to last.
