So I've been stung with having to pay gst on a Kuiu order worth $249 NZ!!
Since when have we had to pay if the gst is worth $60 or more on a order coming in to NZ??

Clothing has a special duty of its own..

"I thought I could bring in up to $400 worth of goods tax-free?
There is a common misconception that goods purchased online from overseas websites for less than NZ$400 can come into the country (be imported) without incurring any duty, GST, or charges. This ‘rule of thumb’ does not apply to goods that attract both duty and GST, such as clothing, shoes, and accessories. Customs charges maybe payable when the value of these goods exceeds approximately NZ$225."

The Gov't changed the rules late last year, due to pressure from retail organizations.
Came down to some odd number like NZD230.
Pricks - got caught importing stainless brake lines for a motorcycle - from Aus., our 'supposed' CER friend.

Ok, was just wondering how long you've had to as I've been bringing in Kuiu clothing for over a year now with most orders worth more and it's the first time I've been stung...

Nah, there is no threshold on clothing. You pay duty and gst no matter what the value. I guess in the case of clothing this is because there is a domestic clothing industry in NZ. As @StrikerNZ points out, always run your planned purchase thru what'smyduty and you will avoid a rant.

Yeah duty on clothing has always been a big issue. We bring in band t-shirts and we pay more in duty when they arrive then they cost to purchase.

I think they are either being more diligent or you were unlucky and your parcel "won the lottery".

I too must have snuck thru the tax grabbers on this side.

Purchased a top, Pack and neck gaiter from Badlands in the US as they had offered me a 35% off voucher. A bit of a manual process to get the order lodged and paid for via their service team but it arrived for a 50% saving at $130 USD as was also devoid local sales tax (15%) as duty free and no pick up from our revenue snatching team... Chuffed at winning the lottery on this one.

And too top it off the gear is absolutely brilliant (can't see how they made it for that price!)
And they threw it on Fedex delivery included in that $130 - Thanks Badlands - You guys crushed it!!!

Not true about clothing, same limits apply. There is just a heavy duty

If the GST and the duty total more than $60 they will collect, plus about 50 bucks in biosecurity charges (dumb system, payment should be included in the import duties).
So the $400 limit simply equates to $60 in gst if there is no duty to collect on the item ie sporting goods. You can find out what percentage duty you will be paying on the whats my duty website. If you get guys like kuiu to declare it as sporting goods, your chances of getting it past customs are way higher.

Just got mine caught for the first time $313nzd jacket turns into a $440nzd jacket... Stink
