    Coffee making setups for backpacking

A recent thread on beer-can stoves got a little off-track when a few of us got carried away comparing our DIY / lightweight / compact setups for that most simple of pleasures - making a real coffee in the bush. Someone asked me to kick off a separate thread on this, so here you go. I'll chuck up my faves, let's see yours. Heathens who think a sachet of instant cappuccino is just as good are welcome to continue in their blissful ignorance

First up, the Swiss Gold pour-over filter.

I used to lug stovetop espresso makers into the bush, but the output-to-weight ratio is ridiculous. Plungers are messy and make a second-rate brew IMHO. Enter the pour-over filter; at 83g it is super light, makes coffee directly into your cup and cleans easily with a quick rinse out. Grinds go in the section with the gold-plated micro mesh, and a second section has holes in the bottom to control the rate that hot water filters through the grinds.

Costs a fraction over $40. Buy from Coffee Supreme or any number of other coffee outlets.

While it was light, the Swiss Gold took up more space in my overnighter pack than I liked. My bro-in-law was into Chemex, and I started playing around with a low-tech version. I made my setup from three containers that Bargain Box sends their sauces in. The smaller container holds enough coffee for 3-4 cups, and the paper filters are biodegradeable so stay behind on the hill under a rock or bush. The trick is to pour the hot water slowly over the grinds in a circular motion, to avoid them 'stewing' for too long.

Once the coffee is ready, the bottom container gets stacked inside the top container making a simple double-wall insulated cup.

Okay, over to the rest of you!

Okay, I want one. You can keep your condensed milk, though. How do you roast your own? I've been toying with the idea of modifying a popcorn maker...

A+ These are definitely the business.
I've got so fussy that I either do cold brew at home (which I'm currently drinking), or swiss gold. Nothing else.
Outside lockdown its pretty much the coffee shop on the commercial machine near every day of my life. Proper addiction.

But its like Guinness - just not the same unless its from the tap.

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

So the hand held grinder holds enough beans for 1 cup, but I take extra beans anyway, anything else just doesn’t taste fresh...
You can add more or less water depending on how strong you like it, it’s not super small or light, but who wants to mess with coffee, right?

Oooooohhh - AEROPRESS - that even sounds good, sounds essential, sounds like I'm gonna order one right now!! (forgive the fact that I'm a coffee hick and never heard of it before)
