I have been thinking about getting a cold smoker unit like a UFO or Smokai. Will just use it in the hooded BBQ or maybe make a cabinet if I get really keen. Any recommendations, do's or don'ts before I get one?

Ive got a ufo cold smoker its really good. You just need to take it apart after every couple of uses and clean the tubes etc otherwise the resin in the wood glues it all together.
These smoke tubes are cheap and cheerfull and do a pretty good job

Yep, got one of those AliExpress ones except it's spiralled like a snails shell. Works good with the right sawdust (has to be quite fine) and can even smoke cheese in a cardboard box
When I was young, I took the GF around the Southern Island in a Bedford Van.
Bolted to the back door was a cupboard about 1m high and 300mm x 400mm, with a door on it and a hole on the bottom right side, to which was fitted a length of air con ducting about 1 m long and 180mm in diameter. This angled down to the ground.
There I would dig a little hole and light a little fire, putting handfuls of twigs, seaweed or whatever into the fire, making the smoke, which went up the tube.
Needless to say the fish etc, was inside the cupboard.
The best was mussels on a rack, and if left to cool and eaten the next day they were fantastic.
Yep its called a lane smoker, best tip for sawdust is to cook it in the microwave for 5 mins before use .... seems to dry off any accumulated moisture in the saw dust. I cut grooves with a drop saw into manuka / lemon / Pohutakawa / macadamia.... they go well on fine dust and yes great for smoking cheese.
