    Yep.
I just use unleaded petrol. Higher octane should go better in theory but I just use 91.

I've had issues using petrol in Coleman stoves - the jets clog up (NZ fuel is too dirty apparently).

For the OP - white spirits are good in Coleman stoves and lanterns (I had a bad batch of "white sprits" from Supercheap Auto that smelt more like kerosene.....won't be using their product anymore)

Do you filter it?(coffee filter works).
Never had any issues with Coleman or Whisperlite units.

If your'e a skin flint like me toasting up to $12 notes for a branded 1 litre bottle of white spirits/ Shellite/Pegasol/Coleman fuel etc, then save yourself a bob and buy in bulk.I get 20l drums of white spirits from BNT or JR Patterson Panel Beaters Supplies.Works out cheaper than water around $3 notes/ litre. No probs running it.Doesnt seem to go stale loosing its octane rating like petrol if stored in the dark.Doesnt need a conditioner additive to get the last drop out of the drum. And you're not leaving a trail of littering spent jetboil cannisters from one end of godzone to tuther

Coleman and Tilley lamps. All we used when I was growing up was kerosene fuel, preheated the mantle/generator with meths. Still got a couple in the shed, 60+ years old now.

Yes this is tricky, A few years ago fluid for burners was often called “white spirits”. If you buy white spirits now you however are buying a type of cleaning fluid. If you want a high quality burner fuel you go for Coleman liquid or Shellite (you can buy Shellite at Bunnings or Mitre 10)

Buy the stuff from a camping store = $11-13/L

    Buy from Pac n Slave = $7-8/L

Buy from a commercial cleaning outfit, as has been suggested = $3-4/L

Its all exactly the same stuff.

yes - right and wrong - most cookers lamps are either kerosene or white spirits - they will not mix fuels and run on either no - Coleman Tilley etc early stuff was kerosene and was preheated most of it by a methylated wick ( tilley ) and some by a little cup which one filled with meths to preheat the lamp etc -most more modern was white spirits - labelled Coleman fuel Shellite mobilite white spirits etc - a lot of the more modern Coleman stuff was labelled duel fuel making out it could be run on petrol or white spirits - wrong wrong wrong any mug who tried the that soon found out they will not run for long on our crap petrol - generators in the lamp or stove will simply burn out - they must be run on white spirits - I have had to replace generators in so many so know- the early kerosene stuff was good - we always had kero lamps and cookers when I was culling and apart from being smelly were very reliable - the more modern white spirts are quick to light and hot stoves

The Coleman fuel (shellite, pegasol, white spirit) is hexane boiling point 70 deg c. White spirits is a thinner for enamel paint boiling closer to 200 and doesn't works well except in the old style heat em up with meths first primus stoves.
Funnily enough hexane has a zero octane rating but that's not related to heating ability. 95 petrol is a good substitute but keep it protected from sunlight or it can get gummy
