Takes approx 1:30 to prime, then approx 7:30 to boil 700ml of water in a semi-tall titanium 750ml mug, with meths and a windshield. I like it so far... not sure what to do with the leftover meths in there after blowing it out. Pouring into anything seems like a mission
e: you can use one of the legs as a bit of "spout" for the leftover meths to run down back into a container, it turns out.
Jeepers, I got bored and timed my 25-30? year old kovea on some doite gas (this is at home no wind) with 1l ti pot 500ml of water 2.5min to starting boil 3 min to boiling its arse off.
Thats at 3/4 throttle full bore at sea level is just wasting gas, drop in temp (within reason not talking arctic or 2500m) doesn't phase it but wind of course it takes a bit longer but would be more wind tolerant than a non pressurized alcohol burner
Yah but I bet your cooker doesn't weigh 24 grams and the fuel container (plastic bladder) also weighs next to nothing. Boiled that water on approx 20ml of meths... I don't mind waiting an extra 3 minutes before I have my cup of coffee in the morning or my mashed spud for dinner.
e: also I am boiling more water?
e2: I bet this meths thing will suck balls in any wind
Yes more water but only half as much again.
I am far to rough to use any bladder but the one inside my body used to store urine untill such time as I need to drink it :D and even then there is a chance it could get punctured.
Yeh the meths idea just seems to unreliable, chances are i would spill all my fuel or it would be blowing a gail if i tried to use it. I'm happy with what i have bought, should turn up in a week or so hopefully

yep but I'm willing to give it a try because of the lightweight of the cooker, fuel container, and the less-waste factor (no half empty canisters to worry about). I know the last one can potentially be mitigated by the refill adapter but I will consider that if the alcohol stove doesn't work out.
Yep I see what you are trying to do of course, for me tho the convenience and safety of gas is hard to beat and I am unlikely to accidentally spill all my fuel.
Lighter is good but not always better, I should probably upgrade my old kovea for the 20dollar TI cooker linked earlier and I may yet but for the weight saved its kind of Meh.
If I am going for long enough to need more than one small canister I aint walking and will fly in my camp cooker and real food.
I am not doing any fly-in trips on my own time in the foreseeable future for various reasons.
In my youth I spent 6 weeks hitch hiking and free camping in England. I carried a Trangia, meths burner as well as a Vango 4.5 kg tent. yup my pack was a fair weight, but I loved that Trangia at the end of the day. I have kept it and still use it regularly and although I like the convenience of gas, I still prefer the Trangia because: it is fool proof, it doesn't run out of fuel halfway through cooking your porridge or rice, you can buy meths anywhere. and it is great to use in bad weather or on windy exposed places, and with practice you always know how much you can cook with the fuel you have left. With the readily available titanium pots now, a Trangia burner would be perfect for me as the only real disadvantage is the weight of the aluminum pots that come with the Trangia kit. I have even seen Trangia copies made from titanium now on Trademe. Gas is convenient until you run out halfway through your cook, but meths is foolproof as with practice you always know how long a fill will last...just don't knock your bottle over!
I have a Kovea Ti cooker. Pretty fast at boiling water, or so I thought until I bought a MSR windboiler. It's so much faster than both my Kovea and my MSR Dragonfly white spirits stove. As an added bonus, I also got a coffee press with it, was luxury drinking plunger coffee in Shelter Hollow last week!
It's really only suitable for boiling water though (which is generally all I need if on the hill) but it would be great if MSR made a fry pan with a heat exchanger for it...
The waste factor is why I don't like using gas, I prefer my MSR, but I do find the gas simpler. I had a meths cooker and found the fact that you can't simmer/fry fry with it a bit of a downer; burning bacon and eggs sucks!
But that little Ti cooker does look cool, damm Aliexpress...
Can't answer this currently... All boiling etc was done at around 750m asl in temps ranging from +10 to -3 or -4. At this altitude and temp's the Windboiler was well and truly quicker. I would think it would need to be at least twice the height and/or below -10 before the white spirits have an advantage
Filler just arrived in the mail. Have a few old regulators I can scavenge the correct threaded bit from.
Anyone rate the trianga 27 ? Looking at replaceing my trusty coleman peak one at some point as ive had a few issues lately with it kinda like the fact you can run it on meths or wack a burner in it nice wide base ect
I got one of these which, being shallower and wider than my other Ti pot, boils faster with the meths cooker + will be more useful for possibly frying a little

What about solid fuel burners, ( I used one from an army surplus shop back when I was a teenager & it was pretty useless ) but just wondering if they have improved , anyone know what these ones are like ?

Keen to have a crack at making a tin can gasifier
Looks just like mine but mine has a frypan lid.

Gas can fits pretty snug in the small one.
So the new setup is under 1/2 the weight of a jetboil, much smaller, cost significantly less and i would be very surprised if there is a noticeable difference in efficiency....

I have been quietly waiting for this report.
Go alright in the snow Jock?
You can use a normal pan with the jetboil, it has a small pot stand. Defeats the purpose of the jetboil though.
I'm thinking of grabbing one of those cheap titanium cookers from aliexpress.
Is all the skin off your fingers still on the handels or is @kiwijames a pussy ? :D
As per my experiences with his Ti cast offs
BRS TI stove, it's so small you could loose it in your pocket :) on a heavy stainless pot took 7 mins to boil 1.5 ltr and in my primus pot with heat exchanger it took 2:20. And for 12 USD it's a safe bet to test, Great for a back up to!
It's got a centre cap vents that make the flame Twist if that makes sense ? A bit of a gimic maybe but it works well, it weighs about as much as a mouse fart, over all a great bit of Chinese kit via aliexpress.

Didn't know about those ones, good find! Got one on the way now. :D
Just ordered one as well.
I've been using this set up from Jet boil, has been damn awesome, boils fast not affected by wind...great in the pack for midday coffee...gas canister fits inside, so the 1lt cup is all the space taken up...

This unit is to be released Jan 2016, already have my order in, nothing better for the fly in trip, compact lite and durable...
