What tips would you guys give to new hunters or folks on a restricted budget.
Scope covers - use an old bicycle inner, insulation tape over the scope tube, just flip the inner tube up.
Meat bags - old pillow slips, or sew a meat bag using weed matting
Tents - learn how to make/use a fly sheet bivy
I reckon you could make a day pack pretty easily. I was looking at twoshotkill's one and wondered if it was home made. Just buy a couple meters of polarfleece, use a length of cord, and buy a $1 day pack from the sallies to use the adjustable straps. Minimal sewing required. Would cost you maybe an hour of work max and $20 I reckon.
Also Wellington chaps - Pete's Emporium in Porirua sells mutton cloth for $8 per 5m, there are longer lengths available but I can't remember the cost off the top of my head.
The Bacho knives are great too. $12 if I remember correctly?
+1 on the Bahco knife, forgot about that one
and yes, a trip to Pete's Emporium just about makes up for the horrors of going to Porirua :D
Learn to hunt your back yard before spending money traveling to hunt remote/renound areas.
Probably easyer for us main landers tho.

Shoes are for the weak go bare feet. A $200 .303 with highland ammo is all you need in bush.

dirt cheap emergency fire-starter materials:
small piece of candle, rub the wax on wood to make it burn better
small strips of rubber inner tube
tampon
Oh girl supplies...they are great.
First aid kit - feminine pads are awesome for bandages. Also check out the local army surplus store for affordable cool stuff like BOOTS Toby and first feild banadages (the cover can be used to remedy one side of a sucking chest wound, my thoughts are with you if you need to use one) Or better yet, pester the army fullas on here for some :D

Scope covers are a pain on the rifle when hunting ,flop round, rattle ,get caught on every dam thing in creation.Put them on after the hunt & to store the rifle sure . A pair of Beach feet to hunt in are quiet to hunt in & only $5 @ Wharehouse ,try them on they need to fit ya.
Probably get a knife from the Sallies too , just grind down a old carving knife or make 1 out of a saw blade .
The back pack dougie is talking about is a pikau sack made from heavy duty fleece... fits a med size hind quaters in it with the legs sticking out the top. Huntec was what i coppied. will put a pic up later.
my old man never had one of those flash polar fleece jobbies, his was an old sugar sack with a stone in each corner where you tie off a bit of baling twine. pretty much the same as a pikau but shit load cheaper, the twine does cut into the shoulder a bit though. they must have been a bit tougher back then.
serious, take a few bits of rag. its great for cleaning the scope, washing out wounds, covering wounds, washing your face, wiping your butt,[single use there of course} cleaning your rifle, holding hot pans. wiping out excess blood from animals cavity etc, blowing ya snozz, lots of uses really. cheap too.

My first 10 odd years of hunting was done with a free 303 then a 80 dollar 308(including scope:D) hand me down steel toe work boots and a home made knife. You dont actually "need" most of the shit we all carry around now but it can make it easier.
If your young just get out there with whatever you have/can borrow.
If your older and just getting into it you can probably afford to buy some flash gear even if just the "essentials"
