custom knives...cost etc

Have been thinking of buying a svord, i like the carbon steel and handcrafted look

Question then, could a knifemaker make one similar, carbon steel or similar, simple wooden handle?
Looking for a general purpose allrounder something along the lines of a slightly curved boneing knife that will skin/bone out, easy to cut out bung holes and mayby stick a pig if the sticker was left behind.Not looking for pretty, steel and wood is pretty to me
A custom budget knife... go on give us a price...

Have emailed svord for some prices. Um yea little bit more than i was thinking
Gorse or manuka if the timber is right and a little bit of rusty steel laying about round the back of the shed with a little history... such and such saw mill blade or giant disc then add a little craftmanship. Time is money and i realise they don't make themselves...

No, plenty growing on the farm though. Have got some 100yr old Kauri from a old villa that was once also a knoc shop.Not sure if Kauri is any good...

Johstone from blackbird valley in Nelson makes a good knife for a reasonable price. He uses some recycled steel, saw blades files etc.The one on the left is one of his and IIRC its from a leaf spring off a mazda ute.It wont hold an edge like the svord on the right, 370bb i found on TM,but its not to bad. Beach burr handle gets thicker towards the back which I like.Attachment 219

John Worthington, a forum member, makes excellent knives. I have had a couple off him.
I have one that has done a lot of work when doing venison and it is a good as the day I got it off him.
It is easy to keep sharp which is a plus for me as I struggle with the simple art of sharpening a knife. You can dress out 20+ animals before it needs a tickle up on a steel. Valuable bit of kit when you were doing 40+ animals a day.
He made me one with a plastic handle that looks like wood. Wooden handled ones do not last long in the game no matter how anal you are at maintaining it.

Yeah Toby, and I was fortunate to be able too work in both seats. Been doing it a long time but I am just a pup compared to Greyghost and another member on here. That old prick GG still reeks of Jet A1:D

My Brother makes mine, and I have yet to find a better knife. He makes hunting, pig sticking, skinning and Chef knives. Not cheap bit then any good investment into your favourite pastimes usualy isn't. he uses's a steel called D2 steel, not stainless.

Gapped axe is right. either invest in quality and it will last a lifetime, or accept the fact that a $99 knife is cheap, but not the end of the world if misplaced.

I confess I carry a Muela knife for hunting - $150, and my own good knives can stay nice-looking and sharp/useful at home in the kitchen.

I have a Wheeler knife. Its OK. A bit brittle and it had a shoulders that Val Vili would be proud of. Pretty average sheath too. Mind you got it for a good price from Steve so wouldn't complain.
Doing it again I will get Al Brown in Napier to make my next knife.

I've got an Al Brown. Great knife.

D2 steel is very chippy. Doesn't like bone. Chips doing jobs like taking a stags head off or getting too vigorous doing the hocks.

Has anyone got Al Brown's contact details? I want him to make me a little sharpening steel. He makes a great job of them.

Al makes amazing folders too.
The Wheeler I have uses Sandvik 12C27 I think.

Get the best out of your Svord by sharpening it with Scary Sharp sharpener.Drop point is light and if tickled up needs to be handled with care.
