Thread: Difficulty importing GPS map file from GPS file depot into my Garmin

Hi all

My gps was playing up (not showing topography all of a sudden) so i updated the software I have downloaded a gps file off of gps file depot. I followed the instructions and downloaded every program needed however I get a pop up saying family ID in use. I have done a google but that has had limited success.

Did you guys shell out 230 bucks for a garmin map or do you guys have better ways to get topo maps into your gps?

Any help would be appreciated

I use Mr Purple's topo maps from the OpenGPS forum. They don't look quite the same as printed topomaps but they are free.

Hey mate,

Just go to https://www.topomap.co.nz/ then click More at the top, then Downloads. If you zoom out a bit you can see all the NZ Topo 50 map references, click the one you're after and it pops up another window with the option: Garmin Custom Map / Google Earth overlay (KMZ file).

Download that and use the Garmin computer App (Basecamp) to load it onto your GPS. You can then load it as a custom map.

Check your user name, Russians not have no access to GPS, best you switch to glonass or baidou

If it’s not working downloading to the GPS, have you tried putting the map file on the SD card?

I'm having difficulty converting the download from gps file depot into something the garmin can read. Appears that the software needed is no longer supported by the smart people who are into maps anymore.

Your not the first to have problems, even Garmin struggle with there own web site, easier get the chip.
