Doing my first fly in hunt to a hut

So, me and a buddy booked our first fly in hunt and staying in a hut but after some advice, hut is fully stoked so don’t need to take cooking gear.

But says to bring big roll bag for clothes and a day pack, I have neither of these as I usually walk in - but they don’t want framed packs. After some advice on what bag? Just a generic 60l duffle and any of the “hunting” brand 25l day packs?

Hunts in late Feb to catch the animals coming out of velvet before every other fella starts hammering the area for the roar. So don’t need hectic warm weather gear - but am probably after some summer pants.

Most my hunting is done off the farm or out of road end camp site so haven’t had to think to hard about what I take as plenty of space.

Also after generic gear tips. Taking some battery packs for sure.

    Cheers gent.

just check there is gas cookers available- be a bugger to get there and have to cook on open fire - as for your gear just go to mitre 10 and get the heaviest garden plastic bags you can get use them doubled be good as for clothes go to chemist and get tube Fucidin or similar anti fungal cream - cures any sweat rash you may get in summer time heat - be extra vigilant with hand washing - small container of hand sanitizer good idea

ps, from expeiance did a late Feb NI fly in last year and it was not that warm some of the time. Damp misty drizel for 1-2 days, hut was on the bush line so hunted both tops, bush margins and 1 guy droped down to the bush terrices 200 mtr below the bush line and saw a lot of deer.
One of those soft roll bags for your cloths & sleeping gear, a cardboard box for food, always take a basic stove, bog roll and a day bag, up to 45 ltr, The pilots don't like the large 70-80 ltr frame packs as they are hard to fit in the storage boxes.

    @SpeightsDrinker couple things
a luci solar lantern for the hut and a solar shower, last couple time we have flown in we put our food in those zip up super market bags, easier to find places to put them. Also use a silver lined insulated bag for any cold stuff (used by farm vets to keep vaccine cold)

yes those new solar pwered lamps are great - we use one in one spot we hunt infrequently - the camp is on a big featureless plateau - just flat bush - so I put it out when coming back late - you can see it thru the tress from a really long way off - makes camp easier to find - I have walked past it - hit the creek and went feck I know where I am - go back young fella - the lamp works a treat

If you get snowed in or you get heavy rain you will need a good book to while away the hours until the weather clears.

There are plenty of deer on the Oamaru private block, Just take a day bag and a duffle bag, the bigger the better.
Your flight is literally 5 mins over farmland.

The huts a bit grotty but has everything there.

Slip on gumboots. Hut slippers. Take your wee aluminium cook set and if nothing else some solid fuel tablets and frame. As for bags. A overnight cloths bag from warehouse is just too easy, somewhere in 50 ltr range dirt cheap. Binoculars a must as is a decent coat for if it gets cold.

    .
Think the chopper lifts off and hovers for 5 minutes while the earth rotates then lands beside the hut

Take some fairy lights and set them around the hut- go through 1 set of batteries on a week long hunt and really make hut life more enjoyable..
