    Fiordland Trip - gear

Heres my gear for our imminent trip into fiordland possibly a 10 day trip, sighted in rifle last night and its putting them all in the same hole so happy as.

From left to right starting at the bottom row:

    Socks - 6x pairs
    Beanie and underwear
    Long sleeve thermals - 4x
    Hunting shorts - 1x
    Longjohns - 3x
Mid layer - 1x fleece short sleeve, 1x merino short sleeve, 1x merino long sleeve
Jersey etc - 1 x fleece long sleeve thick, 1x fleece/water resistant long sleeve, 1 x puffer jacket

    2nd row:
Domex down 4 season sleeping bag
    Army bivvy (thanks @BRADS)
Big agnes tent - will be used on overnighter/extended trips
Waterproof fly to go over tents
    Exped mat
Base camp tent ( 3 man)
Stoney creek tarn coat, stoney creek hydrotough overtrousers
    2 x pair fleece pants

    3rd row:
    Gopro
    Cooking stuff
Headlight and torch with associated batteries
    Rope etc
Bino bag including gps ammo etc
    Boots
    Rifle (308)
Two packs, one smaller for day hunting/overnighters etc

Interested in peoples views on amount of clothes i have. i have never really done a massive trip like this into true backcountry and don't really want to overpack....

Let me know if i have missed anything, this is the bulk of the gear but things i MIGHT buy on the way down are:
    Food
Gaitors (mine look a bit sick)
    Rent a PLB
    Plus some other small things...

I also have some luxuries like a deck chair, possibility of big cooker, mask/snorkle etc if weight is no issue

Can't remember which block you have, but I guess you are choppering to a base camp not walking in, 500 or squirrel? Number in party? Squirrel can carry heaps, 500 is a bit cosier, Jonathan at fiordland heli has a cargo pod underneath on his 500.

Double bag your loo paper, make sure your puffer jacket & sleeping bag are in water proof stuff sacks. All the rest will get wet sooner or later if really hoses down!

Are you flying into a camp site, or are you walking in, or flying to a drop off and then walking? If the last two, too much clothing IMO.

Why 6 pairs of socks? Is it to have a dry pair each day? If putting dry socks in wet boots, they will soon be wet, or you will be in a wet creek soon enough. One pair on your feet and a spare in your pack for camp, two spare if you must.
Same with the long sleeve thermals. One wet for hunting, one dry for camp/sleeping, a third as a spare if you must.
Definitely only two pairs of long johns, one on, one dry for camp. It is tough putting them on wet but they will warm up, dry out soon enough.
Mid layer, I would lose one of the short sleeves.
Jersey - Can you replace the water resistant with a water proof?
If your tent is any good, I would also loose the bivvy bag. I certainly wouldn't be taking two tents either, the fly should give you enough free dryish space outside of the tent.

Flying into camp in a b3, trying to get 6 of us and gear in one trip 685kg is the limit or else can take a slung load possibly for extra $$

Keep one set of longjohn and merino top in a small dry bag all of the time so that you always have them to put on when you get into your sleeping bag at night. By the end of the trip they will likely be your only dry clothes. Everything else will be either damp or wet.

I'd add a some camp footwear (crocs, dive bootties) and I never go to fiordland without my insect head net.

Looks like we have narrowed it down to similar kit lists Jock.
Svend and I have slimmed down our kit list too, but still not down to ultralight levels by any means.

    Great advice @Tahr
The dry sac to keep camp clothes in is a real good way to save on the amount you need to take in.
And NEVER make the mistake of going after a roaring stag in your camp clothes! EVER!
