    Firelighting without flame or flint

Ok so many of you may know about this but some may not so thought I'd share it, I also make a kit for those interested.

Firstly potassium permanganate, you can use a few crystals to purify drinking water, you can use a 1/4 teaspoon to sterilize water to clean wounds and if you use it mixed with vegetable glycerin you get fire in snow or rain. Here's one of my methods, I carry 2 small bottles one filled with each and some lint from the dryer, awesome for use with a flint too!!

So your lighter is out of gas, your matches got wet and its pissing down, gather up dry tinder from the tops or flare out a dry stick with your knife sort all the dry bits then do this.

If anyone wants the two wee bottles I will sell it for cost which is about 20 bucks including the bottles and postage etc, but cheap enough to do it your selves too!!
Use responsibly and do not inhale the smoke, it can't be good.

Another we used to use when I was in the army is a 9 volt battery and steel wool just jam the battery into the middle of the steel wool arching it across the terminals and you can get quite a good ember going

FYI, the glycerin when poured on this slowly reacts and starts a slow ish gunpowder like burn but you need to be prepared with dry tinder and bits etc.

I think pool chlorine and break fluid will create a similar reaction but maybe a bit more violent. Fumes will be more toxic!

Bad subject for me, since I am borderline pyromaniac.

If you are hunting, you can pull out a bullet, pour the powder on what you want to ignite, chamber the case and shoot over the powder, the spark from the primer should ignite the powder.

A Gerber or Leatherman is best unless you look like this:

Easy with a .22 but not so easy with centerfire (steel case is almost impossible). leave a little of the powder in the bottom of the case and fill it with tinder or dry cotton (if you have any). The flaming tinder that comes out the barrel will light powder easily. It is obviously recommended to clean your barrel after doing this.

Been there tried that in a real life survival situation and can say its not bloody easy to start a fire with your ammo.
Older and wiser now I always have two fire lighting systems when in the bush.

Yep great idea just seems a lot simpler to keep a spare lighter in the first aid kit though
