Did some hunting light comparisons tonight. Local gunsmith showed me his brand new Olight M3Xs-UT Javelot he'd just bought ($240 new), and asked how it compared with the Maxtochs now on the market. Took my Maxis and a lux meter round to his place and did some tests. Very interesting. I have an older Maxtoch M24, a recent 2X, and a new model XPro.
The new Olight looked quite glary on the wall but the meter soon clarified actual output. The older M24 showed a softer warmer beam tint, and had a wider beam spot - better for scanning. The Olight had 88% of the output of the older Maxtoch M24, 68% compared to the Maxtoch 2X, and had about 53% of the output of the new XPro - about half.
The story didn't end there...the Olight uses an XPL HI LED which gadgetman and I rejected for the Maxtochs because it chews too much current, runs too hot, and has to stepdown after a few minutes to alot lower output - while the Maxis can remain at 100% power for full batt life. So after 8-9 minutes, the Olight had dropped down to 57% of the M24's output, about 40% of the output of the 2X, and about one third the output of the new Maxtoch XPro. Gunsmith was gobsmacked and immediately wanted a Maxtoch...and managed to extract one..
Still the best all round hunter lights on the planet. And some new kiwi design maxtochs coming too![]()
