Just after a new pair of gaiters and am wanting to see what stacks up and what isn't a waste of $ as my current gaiters are going in the bin and need a new pair for my Tahr trips in June.

Huntech - tried the bushbuck ones and they are pretty crap went back to huntech
Gaiters are bloody expensive for what you get aye. It depends a lot on what you need them for, If its for twigs and river washed in gravel like North Island bush hunting, you want something "quiet" If like you say for Thar work then a more technical type may prove better, and you dont exactly need the quiet style fabrics and can look to more mountaineering type gear that wil stay in place / keep out the rain and the snow, plus help in big river crossings ( I would take them off to lower current drag personally )
I have had good wear from some Kathmandu style cordura ones. Zipped and velcro do up bits with hook for laces, i dont do the underfoot thingy (more to trip you up) I have worn them for maybe 7 seasons out hunting in heavy forest cutover with blackberry and gorse, still going strong, I think they were $50 on special.
I have a pair of Suedy fleecy ones for bush stalking ...... hate them even though I looked and looked before I bought for about 3 yrs. They are your typical hunting store / stoney swazi things that are way too expensive and uncomfortable, hot to wear and not really that practical.
I have another pair that I use all the time when tramping or light duty, that are really minimalist and really only act as a collar between the boot and the leg to stop shit falling in ya boot something like an innovate 8 or outdoor research I wear them in preference to the fleecy ones.
Hey wanna buy some fleecy leg warmers?
Have some Outdoor Research gortex ones I got at Bivouac for forty bucks 4 yrs ago still going strong.
K2 products for me, but if you need quiet ones maybe not the best

Cheers for the responses guys! I bush hunt 80% of the time and as such perhaps 2 pairs would suit me better. I've had long ones(Stoney creek) and the Velcro stuffed out way faster than I would've liked considering the $. I feel a long style would be better for the tops to avoid the snow and miscellaneous stuff that we enjoy when winter Tahr hunting.

I have 2 pair of NZ made Huntech just under knee jobbies, wore them everywhere, moved to a pair of Twin needle putties and these are my new favourite, if in pants i wear hunters element neoprene putties. May use the huntech again sometime

Yep I use neoprene putties in the bush and canvas under knee jobbies on the tops.... Good for the spear grass.... Although lately have been wearing the putties in the tops and am undecided what I like best

Swazi, best I've seen used. have given mine a hard time and ended up breaking the zip. They fixed them for free

I have had the fleece kind, rubbish. Tend to pick up all sorts of shit like hook grass, biddys and good at collecting mud and they fall down all day long.
I have a pair of Tui trail which are good at keeping out the rubbish and don't collect any but aren't very quiet.
I now have a pair of hunters Element Pinnacle Gaiters. Nice and rigid, excellent closure/zip Velcro, great fitting around boot. Best tho is they keep water out quite well :thumbsup:
Cost a hundy and that is about tops for me on gaiters. $150 for swazi is just too much for the gear you get,IMO.
I have a pair of the modern stoney creek that close on the front, tough, well made and they don't fall down. The huntech are not bad for silent stalking, my mate is on its secon pair. He uses a hunter element neoprene boot gaiter to stop water getting in his boots when wet. His are slip on, my hunter element are zip on, but the zip is failing me now:-(
I bush hunt a fair bit as well. I have been using a pair of huntec gaiters for the past two years and they have been quite good. Not as good as the original old school ones, but still good. When they give out I will probably buy another pair.
Very water proof, I had a pair of Macpac ones but were to noisy, went to Swazi and wouldn't go back to anything else, My cousin has some bush buck ones, I think swazi are much better, silent and snug, they are quite tight fitting but that works well.Quote:
