    Garmin etrex H

    So I've bought one.
Doesn't have maps, but you can load multiple waypoints ( clay pans, slips, etc )
Anyone have one, and have any comments ?

And don't tell me I should have bought a Yamahondasuzuki, cos I've already bought it !

    Cheers

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

Had one for quite a while, never let me down.

One thing I will say is if navigating to a waypoint use your old school compass as the internal compass is shit unless moving quite quickly., other than that it is good.

If you don't need bells and whistles then its everything you need...... and the batteries last longer than the new fangled contraptions with maps and cameras and such

Gee, I'd imagine he'd want to take it hunting, and the 'LAST' thing he'd be needing is 'bells and whistles' for that scotty!

I still hunt with my old yellow etrex..... never seen the need to update,or been able to justify the extra$$$$$$ for something that is good to have but nothing we cant do with map n compass. 99% of were we hunt you get back to wagon by walking downhill and have to go a VERY long way to get out of that watershed.

No! you can actually upload/download various icons and waypoints, routes etc by interfacing with a computer and various mapping software (I seem to have lost that ability just now) however, photos, no!

Turn it on.....when it has got signal find mark or waypoint and put one at your position, name it truck, camp or whatever is applicable.
at any major deviation from course or feature you pass put another in.

heading back search nearest waypoint and go to or navigate to.....it will give you a bearing. Use your handheld magnetic compass to follow bearing to way point checking occasionally as you drift off course picking the natural easiest path and so on.

At a second glance i've seen mine is the Etrex 10. Somewhat different. I was actually given it new by a friend and have been told by a couple of mates they're not very good. When i saw this thread it gave me a glimmer of hope ha ha
