Apparently Garmin have bought out delorme and have released a new handheld model that has maps, can send texts and also has the sos feature.

Its the explorer version that has the GPS.
Its here, apparently a mate has tried one. @Stu71 has the non-explorer version. We used it during our roar trip in Haast last week. Brilliant.
That sos button sticking out the side looks like a lot of accidental activations to me.

Problem with these systems is it means the missus can still tell you what to do even when our out the back of beyond guess that's what the on / off buttons for
Yeap these sorts of things are brilliant until you forget to take it with you, and your girlfriend is on the other side of the world thinking that you do have it and panics because she hasn't received any messages, then tracks down the girlfriends, sisters etc of all in the hunting party and gets them all crazy too, rings every helicopter company in the south island and generally causes a big shower of shit to await you when you fly back out. aye @sambnz?
Him I was looking at getting one for my Stewart Island trip next year......guess I'll stick to the map and compass....like I did the last two trips.
Think I'll Hire a plb for doc!
Anyone no cost?
Cheers
I did a trip to Stewart Island a couple of years ago and we hired a mountain radio. It was useless and we tried all sorts of aerial configurations and couldn't get it to work.
I own a business and have a couple of kids. A lot can happen in 7 days and it would be reassuring to be able to be contacted by the outside world if shit was going down. No phone signal down where I was.
What type of signal does it send to who/what and for how long.

What happens when you press the SOS button/
1/2 way down for inreach
For users of inReach devices, which again push a signal straight to GEOS, the two-way communications of the device add an unmatched level of expediency and specificity to help aid the response effort.
When the help button on an inReach is pressed and the distress call received by GEOS, a two-way line of communication is opened. GEOS can request details pertinent to the type of emergency, condition of victims, and location specifics like how accessible is the scene to standard first responder vehicles. The victims on scene can then be informed of how long it will take for a rescue to reach them, or what they might need to do to better their chances of rescue. The victims on scene can even be given critical life saving medical instructions over the inReach device.
The procedure for dispatching help directed at an inbound SOS call are relatively unchanged throughout the entire GEOS global network. It’s important to understand that GEOS can only alert the authorities proximal to the distress signal. It does not facilitate the response or effectiveness of those resources. Although unlikely, there are places in the globe where rescue assets are simply not available.
With the button pushed, and now better understanding who might be arriving and how they learned of your predicament, the only variable is whether or not you have SPOT’s one-way communication or inReach’s indespensible, and possibly life-saving two-way comms.
