I did a trip to Stewart Island a couple of years ago and we hired a mountain radio. It was useless and we tried all sorts of aerial configurations and couldn't get it to work.
I own a business and have a couple of kids. A lot can happen in 7 days and it would be reassuring to be able to be contacted by the outside world if shit was going down. No phone signal down where I was.
When we were down there for 10 days two Febs ago we hired a Sat phone, it was next to useless, could hardly ever get signal. I think we must have had the old type, should be all binned as you cannot rely on them. Sounds like the Iridium system is much better.
