What's the "buddy feature " on view ranger ?
You can check where friends have been and stuff like that if you both allow it. Don't believe it's live though - or not unless you have cell reception. Could come in handy though if you wanted to tell a mate about a real good spot, etc.
I nearly bought a top of the range dedicated GPS but then just thought i'd check what sort of apps are available. There are far too many reports of the GPS on top of the line phones outperforming the dedicated GPS devices. To me the only advantage is the durability or ruggedness, as mentioned. But I think that can be negated.
I'm glad i've limited my devices, but still have to carry phone, binos, rangefinder, plb. Now if someone could come up with a smart phone that was also a PLB and maybe even a rangefinder.....
Yup is 1:50000 for sure, remember you don't get the 20 meter contours on 1:250000 scale maps (same as the old paper maps). Contours are 100m @ 1:250000 I believe. The area in the screen shot is basically 1 square km, with contour lines every 20m. Don't mistake a unclear zoom level for map scale. Overall clarity of the Topo50 maps depends on the zoom level incorporated into the maps, the higher the zoom level the greater the file size as you need more tiles for a given area. Basically in Locus once the max available zoom level is reached in a given map you can choose via settings to either lock the zoom or continue zooming where the image is simply enlarged, thus going unclear.
Try the zoom slider on www.nztopomaps (it has the different map scales bracketed on the zoom slider)

Legend mate
Or pay for birds eye :)

Above is the link to a sample satellite overlay that'll hopefully work on compatible Garmins. Let me know if it works as I don't have a unit here yet to try it on. The sample area is just north of Kaweka Flats Biv in Kaweka Ranges.
Simon
Not sure of the exact zoom levels VC but when we were out in the central north we were using it to hop from clearing to clearing. The detail is similar to google earth (shit in my opinion)
What we did find is that the iPhone maps (not google) have more detail (could pick a grassy clearing from a swamp).
I cannot justify the money just to have a sat picture of an area that I could just as easily print of google.......
I find Microsoft's Bing Sat pics to be of a better quality than Google.
Which screenshot? The one you posted on the previous page seems to have contour lines every 100m according to the scale at the bottom.
If you can get 1:50,000 for free on Locus then i'd be impressed!
Do you know of a way to add DOC boundaries to it? I have my budget way, but it'd be great to have really accurate overlays for them.
Mate you do realize the distance between contour lines as viewed on a map vary with the gradient of the terrain? On flat ground contour lines can be kilometers apart or non-existent, on a near cliff stacked right next to each other. Contour spacing as viewed has nothing to do with map scale.
Mate I'd put my left nut on the line that it's 1:50000... fuck it and my right one too!

@MattyP a South Island example might make it more obvious

And one more for good measure, this time zoomed out a bit. The actual picture on-screen is clearer than the attached pic, I guess it's compressed somewhere along the way.
As for DOC boundaries I know you can download the DOC boundaries for the entire country on koordinates website but it is a huge ass csv file that'd need converting to kml. Shame you can't just download the area you want as the website gives you the option to download as a.kml file but the entire country is too large apparently. You'd need to cut and convert the areas of interest from the csv file.
Some reading here but arsed if i'm going to try it :D

Now that's more like it! Definitely look like 1:50,000 now. I wonder what maps they are, as they look different to the LINZ ones that Viewranger uses. What are they called?
Sounds like a hassle to add the DOC boundaries, I guess i'll just stick to my basic method of drawing them in by having Viewranger open and referencing against the DOC ones.
DOC could definitely make life easier in terms of availability of information. Yes, you can find it on their site, but the site is a total shit fight. It took me quite a while to find the maps with approved hunting areas shaded in, and it still does, and i'm reasonably tech savvy. Not to mention some maps cut off and the hunting area goes off the page, and I assume you have to try and find the block next to it and then put those maps side by side to figure it all out. I haven't had to do that yet, thank fuck. It's no wonder that people get caught out in the wrong areas if you ask me!
They are from the NZtopomaps database. Might look different because you can select different view options for the same map, eg shading on/off, normal/low/high contrast on/off, night mode or layers on/off. Here's some examples of the same map but with different options enabled.

Standard contrast, no shading

High contrast with shading

Standard contrast with shading

Low contrast with shading

Night mode no shading ;p
I reckon the shading makes the maps almost look 3D.
Sorry forgot to try. Will give it a go tonight
Cool shading options. Viewranger has a night vision mode but no shading options. The maps look better in my opinion though. Here's an example of my drawn in DOC boundaries:

And zoomed in a bit. Can go down to 200m scale along the bottom:

Tried the maps and couldn't get them working, just didn't give me an option to enable the map. Might just be me
Just tried that. Do I unzip the download?
kmz right? Nah it should be able to read it fine.
When I unzip you have a doc.kml and a file with jpgs
yeah that's right contents, but don't unzip the kmz contents just try placing the kmz file in as downloaded.
And then just settings, map, select map and it should br there? I have nothing
fark knows sorry mate. Unless jpgs are wrong size somehow. I've got a 62s coming so will have a play and let you know.
No worries mate

Different device but they all do the same thing....
@PerazziSC3 got my 62s today put sample map in "CustomMaps" folder and it worked fine, just needed to find the right place in Kawekas to view pic in high res. Stuck some Topo50 overlays on too, looks better than Garmin Topo.
