    Generators

    Ok folks

Looking at grabbing a generator, for use when power goes out occasionally to run tools and boil the jug etc. Guna have to be 2.5kva plus for start up surges. Have used Honda suitcase and 4kva ones in the past and impressed but just found this at mitre 10 for a heck of a lot less

    https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/power...-watt/p/233033

Any one had 'powermax' stuff in the past? Cheap and nasty and dies the third time you use it or goes ok?

Don't want to invest too much into this as its only a back up option having said that I want the back up to work!

it all depends on the wave of the output, you can light incandescent bulbs or boil a jug from pretty much anything providing the amperage is sufficient but unless its a pure sine wave output then any electronics connected are at your peril

I've got a Repco 5KVA 'special' - Chinese of course.
Modified sine wave, so not for electronics, but runs almost everything else OK.
    Same purpose as yours.
Used in earnest once - but bloody glad we had it.
Less than $1K at the time.
Spends more time charging the starter battery than anything else.

Spend the money and buy the Honda inverter EU20i
I know they are three times the cost of the one you note from Mitre 10 but I will guarantee you will never regret it.
    Honda EU20i are
    -Way lighter and compact
    -Vastly better fuel consumption
-Quality power that will run sensitive electronics and computers ( probably cleaner power than normal mains )
    -Eco throttle is awesome
    -Very quiet
-Two can be linked together for 4kw output
-Mine runs a full size espresso machine and that's all that matters

I have a 1000 watt pure seine wave job from Mitre 10 (powermax) that I use pretty much only for running the modem and charging laptop when the sun doesn't shine enough. Pretty common occurance in Nelson, despite the tourist board claims
It is a 2 stroker, so have to make sure the plug is cleaned regulary, but it has not let me down yet

I got one from http://www.bunnings.co.nz/ryobi-4-st...800w_p00251102 which works very well. The only down side is it is pull start, but starts real easy first time on choke.

Hi have worked in the generator industry for the last 10 years in NZ, Hire sales and service, The biggest rental company's in NZ only use Hondas, 2and 3 Kvas, for their small single phase stuff, in 5 years with NZGH/Aggreko I have only seen one fail out of a fleet of 50ish,

Every Grey Nomad in Oz who drives a Jeep or ford Ranger has a Honda EU 20 to annoy those on solar panels,so envious when it's cloudy for a few days.

Be careful many of the new Hondas are made in China and I believe are giving grief with timing issues!
