Thread: Good folding knife with gut hook

Almost shot my dog today.

The prick somehow got hold of my gerber that was gifted to me by someone who has passed on.
I have had it for years and I carried it on every venison run I have done since I was gifted it. Fair to say it has paunched a fair few animals.

I am after a good folding knife with a gut hook to replace it.
I am not a knife horder so don't really know the best brands or steels they are made from.
All advice welcome.

any of you knife making guys feel up to the task????? I reckon any number of you fine gents would be more than up to task of taking that piece of history and memories and giving it a new lease of life.........

Already have someone who has offered to restore it which means a lot to me. Not a flash knife by any means but it has huge sentimental value to me.


I still have no idea how the flea taxi got hold of it because of where I keep it.

Time to put a decent timber or deer antler handle on it and carry on. Simple leather sheath and better than new.

I've got the ordinary blade version, might be cheaper to buy online. R93, is that old dog in your avatar the culprit?

i only use buck knives nowadays (apart from my leatherman multi) gerbers were either great or junk, crkt coulnt hold an edge longer than a HB pencil.
spiderco is good but expensive, svord (nz made) is great but ugly

All I can say is if I had to clean up as many animals as I did when doing venison I wouldn't do it without a gut hook.
I honestly can't recall ever popping the gut using one. When you use one enough it is like having a zipper on your carcasses. (also great for initial cuts when skinning)

Once you started prepping the carcasses for the sling load out you had to paunch the animal leaving the spleen as part of the pluck and at least pop the diaphragm.
If you had a couple loads you would get as many ready for the chiller while the machine was dropping a load back at base or a truck to save time at the chiller.
That involved hocking, pulling the throat and pluck free and be able to be hung outside the carcass via the diaphragm then removing the ass hole and any bladder and intestine. This all has to be done as fast and clean as possible.

I doubt I am as quick now being out of practice but when I was doing it daily I could have a deer ready for the chiller in under a minute depending on size and some guys I worked with were quicker again.
It was immensely frustrating trying out new shooters. An experienced guy would have 10 carcasses done by the time most would have one done and it was nearly always a mess.

What everyone calls a gut hook was actually designed for doing the skinning cuts, not gutting, but works fine for gutting if shaped right. I use one for skinning, but still open the gut with a normal blade, though I used to do that on 1100 sheep a day during varsity holidays so have had a bit of practice!
