I upgraded from a Garmin 12 to Garmin 600 about a year ago and wished I had done it sooner. The only thing with the touch screen is that you need to use your finger, which is a bit of a pain when hunting in cold conditions as you need to take off a glove, but in saying that I still prefer the touch screen. If you prefer buttons you might want to go with the 64s. The best thing to do is to go down to a store and play with both options.
You can buy gloves with special fingertips now, so don't need to take them off.
