    Gut hook knives?

    Anyone use them? They don't seem very popular. Not for gutting, but seem to make light work of skinning an animal.

    I’ve used one. But prefer the old drop point. You still need to make a small incision to get the hook going.
    Also I found the hook needs to be big enough to take your steel so that you can keep an edge on it.

    not a gut hook, but same idea - OutDoor Edge Swingblade. Love mine - a really great knife and not one to break the bank.

    I've done the same thing to a Peasant knife. 2 mins with a grinder, couple on the stone and it's good to go. Abit of fuel line over it when not in use. Good for running around the hocks as well

    if somehow I lost the first two fingers of left hand I could see it being usefull........been gutting without a fancy hook for 40ish years so cant see the need of another knife just to do one task that is already covered.

    I bought one years ago when they were in fashion, found I cut myself with the blade and went back to a Mercator. Still got it somewhere if I find it you can have it.
    @MB I’ll have a look tonight.

    So, tried it and worked like a dream. Unzipped the skin on an animal in one movement. I’ve decided to buy a smaller gut hook knife as my main hunting knife.

    The knife that Shootm kindly sent me is now surplus. You can either have it back, or I’ll pass it on to the next forum member. First dibs Shootm, after that first come, first served.

    Good stuff
    I don’t want it back.
    Put it in the pay it forward section of buy sell and give it to a younger hunter starting out or someone that’s short of coin that will use it but not sell it on, my gift to the forum mate

    Been using one for ages. Just got used to it I spose.
    When doing venison, speed and cleanliness was important. I found I was faster and cleaner using one, once I had a system. I use it alot for head skinning as well as I can get nice lines with it.

    It is definitely not a race when hunting for the freezer but watching people fuck around for ages with poor knife work which should only take 2-3 mins max, frustrates the hell out of me.

    Wot he said.

    I was given a Buck knife for my birthday years ago and wasn't too sure how it would go but once you get used to it, it's fine. I like it for running down the guts and up the legs. I use it more than my Sword knife these days, mainly because it's smaller, lighter and easier to carry around.

    There are many ways to skin a cat.
