I have the 2 watt unidens, they work reasonably well but if you get just over the other side of a ridge they are crap, whereas i believe 5 watt ones are better, a bit more power to push over. In saying that UHF is still only really line of sight.

The 5w Midland units (and others) cheap as off ebay look attractive, but be aware that many of these operate on frequencies that are illegal to use in NZ, and theres big fines if they caught you, they do police it.

gme is good. but i encourage you to find ones that take replaceable batteries so if they go flat while out in the middle of nowhere you can change them and keep going.
uhf is line of sight, it doesnt really "bounce" of anything.

I think these are only for Amateur frequencies?
I can be wrong but otherwise you'll need a ham license to operate.

the uhf band these work on requires no license.
you may pay an extra fee if you wish to use repeater sites but as a line of sight device between 2 or more radios you are fine.

hmm, if you only stick to the prs frequencies which you'll have to program in.
these aren't frequency locked like a regular citz band radio so easy to stray where you shouldn't....

The Baofeng units can have the vhf band switched off which avoids the chance
    of transmitting on licenced frequencies.

Just don't use the marine channels - you need a license to use them (except in an emergency) and it is also illegal to use them land-based.
