I ended up getting a couple of these in - Radiogearpro.com - 5W, need a bit of programming which is a pain, but once done they work well. They are currently US$60 delivered.

which are illegal to import and if caught operating can be fined up to $10,000 . there are strict regulations on the fixed uhf frequencies civilian band UHF radio equipment is allowed operate in nz, most equipment sold outside nz is not configured to only work on the permitted channels, customs regularly intercept radios in the post and fill up pallet bins of seized uhf handsets.
careful you don't get caught, last year i came across a guy in a sign written truck off rd near cromwell, employed purely to track and monitor use of radio signals.. kinda like a fisheries officer but for radio signals ffs

If they are illegal, then so too are the programmable Tait units sold locally.

if they don't meet the requirement then possibly they are too.

there is also the weird laws around something sold here being ok and importing the same to not be ok.. certain knives and knuckle dusters for instance, can own and buy here, cant bring in though.. odd double standard
either way the rules on radio channels is all online

Sort off but as long as you have a bit of paper from Radio Spectrum Management saying you you can use a frequency then you can have that in your radio.
Licenced Amaturs have different rules and regs.

PRS frequencies you can fill your boots.

Yes. And in theory the if you can have a Tait unit programmed for only UHF/PRS then there should be no issue with these as long as they can be programmed to lock out the other frequencies?

We use these around work, transmit fine through brick walls and interference from electrical seems to be minimal. good battery life.
Work just as well as the 5W GME hand held unit we also use.

I picked one up dirt cheap second hand. Cant figure out how to programme it and just use it to listen to marine forcast or as a spare alongside my 2 Unidens on UHF.

As they are a mostly duel frequency VHF/UHF, you are supposed to be a licensed amateur to be able to buy one.

Also, the battery life is not as good as my Unidens, despite very little use

    Not quite GM
Tait radios are type tested. The imported cheapos arent.
Programmable isn't the issue. It's the radio spectrum they work on and whether the radios are dual band etc.
NZ PRS uses a very narrow band. Unless you hold a amateur radio licence you wont be able to use most of the channels or bands. Programming the radios you can turn off the channels you can't use etc.
You can get any radios type tested though, costs are astronomical!!! Try 5 grand for size!
Just gone through it as we have imported some radios for race radio in the car and pits.
