Definitely get a Garmin over anything other dedicated GPS device. There's a bunch of Kiwis who produce free Garmin compatible autorouting roads maps and topomaps. The road maps are updated weekly and the Topomaps are updated approx 6-monthly. www.gwprojects.com/forum
i think i will prefer the touch screen on the magellan but how does the position accuracy compare?
I've never used a Magellan. I've had a Garmin Oregon 450 and now have the Oregon 650. Both are rock solid in the bush. 3-5m accuracy most of the time.
The 450 has a resistive touch screen, which is a shittier form of touchscreen than the capacitive touchscreen on the 650 - same tech as smartphone screens, just not the same stupidly high res display.
What has attracted you to the 62s, with it's (IMO) sucky button interface and display, vs a new generation Oregon with multitouch?
Comes down to Money really, 62s for 400 or 610 for 330
Can't argue with that.
I had a play with a magellan for about five minutes in the shop when deciding. And couldn't stand how it was set up
How do the touch screens go in the rain with wet hands?
Has anyone had or used the magellan 610 or 710 units? What is the accuracy? I am buying second hand and that is looking to be my preference due to cost but if there has been failures and bad accuracy i will make the step up to the garmin. Cheers
Went into Smart marine today and the have lowrance endura sierra on clearance for 279, anyone used those?
Dont dick around with anything else mate, buy the Garmin 62s.
Okay okay! The bank says otherwise but will just have to save up a bit longer
Yeap. You will save the extra money spent on the Garmin with the free maps vs. the maps you would have to but with the maggellin. Everyone uses them for a reason. My oregon 450 works a treat. Have a look second hand also. Paid $200 for mine and its mint
Yeah mate just scan Trade Me, thats where i got mine!!!!!
We use 62's for work all the time (forestry), and all our units are now 2-3 years old. None have had any issues, are easy to use and are reliable in the tight bush. I probably wouldn't go with anything else as they've been so good for us.
Had a bad run with battery and reliability problems with a Magellan eXplorist 510 out of warranty barely ever used.
You can get 64s are $402 from triginstruments in Wellington. Better accuracy than a 62s.
On my phone and can't work out how to edit my last post. Also meant to add that the 64s also uses GLONASS (Russian GPS) in addition to gps. Heaps quicker to pick up a location in the bush
This has to be the most convincing poll ever on here, 22-nil in favor of the 62s.
I have the 62s but have never seen a magellan so didnt vote.
Ive been looking at the alpha, one that comes with tracking collars. I like the way it works. You can communicate with other Alpha displays and see where they are along with the pooch (s). But I have not yet got the gorse out of my pockets
I brought a garmin dakota 20 and it does the job nicely
Had a 62 cs? From 2008? Bloody good. Used in nz for a tester, mongolia, west africa, all with no fault. Frooze it and baked it (-35 to +45 c), then gave to brother in law in mongolia 5 years ago, and still going. Likes batteries though. Not to sure on map up grades for them though.
