    Hard to fathom?

Here's a Svord on a US Knife site.

It would cost NZD104 freight included from the States to here.
I haven't looked, but the last time I did it worked out cheaper than buying from NZ. Strange.

Yep. Found the same thing a year or two ago. I live about 20km from their factory/workshop in Waiuku, yet it was cheaper to buy on Amazon.

So what's new? 30 years ago whilst living in Oz I was astounded by the number of NZ made products that were cheaper to buy there. Things like processed milk products, lawnmowers (yeah it was a while ago). And to top it off my income there was higher so my buying power greater to start with. Domestic market subsidising the export market? Quite strange because on my return to NZ I worked for a company where the rule of thumb was they had to export 3 tonnes of product to yield the same profit they could with 1 tonne of domestic sales. Cheap Chinese imports to NZ have of course shagged that.

Sometimes its plain ridiculous, but I guess thats the price we pay for not having to live in a shithole country, plus if we didnt have the export markets with their massive buying power then things would be either more expensive, or we would have a crappy income.

Some of the probs of business in NZ, no population, heaps of competitors and some crazy leasing prices. I'd hate to be in "retail". Then of course online is up you!

I don't mind paying extra for legit NZ made products, they wouldn't be making much from exports.. Especially Svord, not exactly a bigtime company.

Different story when H&F & GC / importers try sell their Lowa boots for million $$

The us companies buy in bulk and so get a discount, not sure but they may not have to pay certain taxes (gst? Maybe, never did tax law), we on the other hand pay full price mostly, although when I visited Waiuku with cash prices were flexible...

Mind you that knife doesn't look very good to me, I have one of the smaller ones and don't really rate it.
