Just spoke to my local AO about A Cat safes as I'm in the market, but on a budget. He said it has to meet a few basic requirements.

    1. it must be lockable.
    2. it can't be opened with hand tools... screwdriver, hammer, pry bar etc. so if a someone came across it they couldn't smash it open
    3. it cant be moved.

I asked about the steel ones, he said cheap ones are shit can can be opend with a hammer, and crow bar = fail
He also said that they frown upon the ones that have the second internal lockable compartment if you're using it to store your bolt = Fail

The reason being that they need to be stored separately and technically they 'could' just take the whole safe and have a working firearm. So bolt and ammo stored in a seperate lockable box somewhere else.

The I aksed about hand made lockable boxes, eg. a sturdy customwood/plywood locable box/cabinate. He said yep as long as it meets 1, 2 & 3 above, and bolt and ammo are seperate..... So this is my weekend project, should cost less than half a bought one and I can customise to what I need.

Lots of AOs have their own interpretation....

You don't have to store bolts separately....semis, lever action, pump action, break opens would be pretty difficult.....

It is "nice" to store them separately because then the firearm is useless, as it is when you forget your bolt on a hunting trip ....

Most shops I've been too have the bolts in their firearms on display these days
