    Howa 1500

Has anyone had a go at making a decent 1/2 cock on the Howa Mini or 1500.

Doesnt need one, has a double safety, one to 'lock' the bolt, the first safety to lock the trigger.......

always laugh when i hear hunter/shooters talk about about 'dont trust the safety on a rifle'....why not?

the Howa is a modern Japanese technical masterpiece......not a 100 year old Lee Enfield with a worn 'dodgy' safety......

just my 2c, because ive got one!!!!!!!

If I'm going to rely on my safety I usually test it with rifle pointing to the ground after I've put it on an keep it pointing in a safe direction thereafter I.e. Don't have rifle over shoulder with round in Chamber.

Have found that safety, half cock, bolt open/closed is a hugely personal thing and for me it varies as to where I am and who I am with.

A mate showed me the half cock idea. Tried it with my Howa dry. Not recommended with live ammo.

I remember using the Weatherby version of it years ago and finding the safety awkwardly positioned for my thumb, maybe partly because it was an unfamiliar rifle but I had to drop it right down off my shoulder to take the safety off - I had shouldered the rifle for a deer in front of me thinking I'd flick the safety off when I was ready to fire, but I couldn't reach it/find it with my hand in a shooting position.

I think they've revised the design since then though, hopefully they improved that.

Have never used the safety on a bolt action, only on a semi. Old habits hard to change, every other bolt action I have has a decent half cock.

I like the safety on my Howa. But I bend my trigger finger up and flick it forward. Only really use it shooting prone for varmints so it's not a bush stalking situation. But in that spot just flick it with thumb as you shoulder rifle I would think
