I really rate sarvo's boots. The 150 dollar gore Tex ones made by talon.

They are hot in the summer even in the ordinary lining. But that may be my socks rather than the boot.

I also have had a good run with the lightweight Salomon Quest boots. Also, being from Oz you mightnt have heard of them but micro spikes are awesome for the tussock country & general slippery stuff. https://www.bivouac.co.nz/kahtoola-microspikes.html

Double ditto on that here too. @Rees what part of the country are you in? If you are in chch you can try my pair first if you like to see what you think before you talk to @Sarvo If you are not too heavy aI have a pair of Mondeox High boots that I have worn once. Though in saying that the Talan ones are probably a better deal.

they look Alright, proberly look a little lighter than the Ridgeline warriors?

im not "heavy", about 60kg ?


i dont like having too may options and Boots is certainly a too many options bracket item.

goin to hav to try before i buy though i think- too risky not doing so. which means unless there is a distributor/seller of the talon then im not goin to see?? being Gor tex though they should be fairly Flexi all around and tie in tight with the laces?

how is the heel department?
solid or flexi or so so flexi/solid ....

So moral of my Boot saga is the Felt lining in the Heel has given away and is onto the Bare plastic type hard stuff that runs around the Heel and along the sides which kind of acts like it gives support to the base of the feet to the toes----
meaning they are eating the Heels of my Socks with the amount of movement i have in there and thus is giving me blisters and hard hot spots when im climbing-- I tried to dick around with them this arvo and have basically fucked them--- So its now a certainty that i'll Buy new boots before the Xmas break - aka next two weeks!

Think ill just go into Huntin an Fishin store, Eilios and Gun City, look for whats in the price range, Try and Buy---

Because these are shagged I cant gamble on buyin a Set unseen- so that rules out Sarvos options IMO.

I posted about a few boot options on my FB and had alot of Feedback, mostly sayin to go for Lowas however i cant justify that for purpose of this trip-
im happy to buy one set an if they last me for 12 months then I'll be happy-

i'll take all advice on board but wont know what i'll walk out with until on the Day-

will drop back in in near future once i purchase-

john bull make a really good tramping/work boot.leather upper with decent amount of protection around edges so they dont get scuffed up on shingle etc. highlanders they are called $199 according to the net..... they worth a try out.

There are usually good sales straight after christmas if you can wait until then. Worth wandering into Bivouac, Macpac etc and seeing what they have on special.

Everyone will recommend their favourite brand but worth remembering the most important factor is what fits your feet, not someone else's feet.

I certainly have them. I have not yet had much chance to walk in them but over the next few days I will. Comparing them to others I have seen they certainly appear to be a far better deal. I paid $200-$250 for my Mondeox but while they are great on flat ground and tracks, I found my frame was too had on the sides for the steep stuff and they would poke me in the ankle as the leather would bend where I dont. Maybe it is me being a heavey set person that causes grief to boots, but I used to have a pair of Skellerup Arctics that I wore for years and cannot get them any more. Classic screw on skellerup sole, wore that bald on predominantly grass and clay, have them resoled with another set of Skellerup (Comando)?) soles, and wore them bald as well. By then they were falling apart at the seams.

I have some of @Sarvo and they work pretty bloody good (in the bush / river flats) not sure I would rely on them chasing tahr or chamois but then there are proper boots for that and he sells them too
