Thread: Hunting rainjackets?

I've come to the conclusion that my rainjacket is due for retirement. It has been tough as hell and excellent for a lot of years, but it's not cutting it anymore and I don't think a goretex reproof will be able to save it.

So, what're people using for rainjackets? I'm happy for it to be simple and no fuss, but would like it to be robust - don't have any time for something that'll tear if it snags on something or needs to be handled with care.

Suggestions? I can sometimes get stuff cheap overseas through contacts, but I really don't know what's worth the spend and what isn't. Maybe there's an Nz supplier worth buying from?

Local to Chch even. They have pop up sales occasionally. And they are able to repair if something did happen

I've got a Milsurp French army goretex jacket. Heavy but bullet proof. I'll be getting another mil surp one when this one eventually needs replacing.

Earth sea sky hydrophobia for longer walk in type trips where weight and packability matter.
Cactus rain jacket for everything else

Ex military MVP, Sympatex or Goretex are excellent value but can be noisy as they don't have the soft shell or brushed finish. There are a few NZDF MTP ones on the website above and they are really good for a quarter of the price of a commercial one.

I use the lightweight Halo.

However if gorse, blackberry or matagouri are around I don't wear one.

As Happy Jack says, I use a light one as well, only pull it on when I know I'm in for a soaking, otherwise I use a Stoney Creek Froastline, it's shower proof which is suficent most of the time. I've just recently bought a Stoney Creek "Stow it" jacket for my raincoat, but big enough to pull over all the other stuff I seem to be wearing these days.

I have a Stoney Creek Huntlite that I do not recommend

It has some nifty grip strips to stop your rifle sling slipping off your shoulder but beyond that and esp given the price it is, as the British are wont to say, all a bit pants

Stoney creek stowit seems to work pretty good

Swazi Tahr XP if you like a pull over so less leaks at the front

yes swazi either thar coat or wapiti coat just a class above

I've had a few of those Swazi Tahrs (still have 3 of them) and they are ok when new but they soak up water die to the soft outer layer and get heavy and take a long time to dry and none of mine have lasted more than about a year before they leak. Still keep them as a windproof layer for at work etc but don't really put much faith in them anymore
