There are no issues. They are not classed as a dangerous weapon. I have brought many in directly myself with. No holdup or customs work required what so ever.

Regarding blade size and weight, heavier is not always better. I have an Iraqi Freedom, Have used the Enduring Freedom and have also got a standard "agricultural" one which is a couple of hundred grams lighter. It cuts much better due to the blade having less thickness. The former two have a presence and feel all of their own but don't slash as well.

Tempering can be a bit hit and miss but you're always going to get that with some dude squatting over a fire with jandals and a safety squint.
