    Kuiu mid & base layers

    Hi guys,

I see Kuiu have a pretty good looking sale on at the moment.

I'm in the market to upgrade the old base and mid layer tops. How do these handle NZ conditions (North Island) including wear compared to some of the usual NZ brands?

Keen to hear some feedback or favorites?

    Cheers.

    Hi jaybe,

I've got a couple of the pro merino mid layers. Have not worn them Bush bashing yet but feel like they would wear better than other merino mid layers I've worn (icebreaker etc) but not as well as the std hunting brand fleece layers. That said, the quality feels much higher than the fleece mid layers I've worn.
I did rip one on a wire fence and it hasn't torn excessively or continued to get worse at the tear. Relatively new so not a seasoned review but impressed with the quality and fit so far.

    Cheers,
    Elliott

Amy merino is pretty soft, it will tear or hole more so than other fabrics. If you're bush stalking then a merino outer layer is probably not going to last. The kuiu peleton 118 is good, durable and fast drying. Another notable piece of information, is that merino is hydrophilic, meaning in the winter time it will absorb sweat and be wet which can become a very cold layer to wear. The kuiu peleton118 does not absorb sweat but the sweat evaporates fast and leaves the layer dry faster than merino. I wear merino in summer time as the sweat absorbing off your body to the fabric has a cooling effect. Most all kuiu garments have an antimicrobial content as well which helps prevent your clothes from stinking on multiple day hunts.

I've tried all the big name hunting brands merino. First Lite is the best in my opinion at merino- its super strong and can take quite a beating. I don't baby my gear at all when hunting and I've had a Wick QZ going on 4yrs now and only a few holes to speak of. Sitka has the softest on the skin and it's holding up alright, not sure about the stitching on it. Wasn't the biggest fan of my KUIU ones, thought they were quite scratchy. Again, just my opinion from using them.

I've a few Kuiu merino's. I think they're fairly robust but mine are quite old and may be different now. I do have a Gila hoodie but I use it more for leisure than hunting. Very good as a overtop for golfing . I've had a Tiburon shirt for a long time and it's fantastic for summer. I've recently replaced this with another Kuiu Tiburon hoodie as the shirt doesnt have a high collar and the HB sun is pretty hard. Yet to know if this one will last as well but I've had a good run.
