    Lewis winch : gear reduction

Anyone here tried their hand at making something like a Lewis chainsaw winch ?

I've got a spare Husky 36 that would be a good candidate for this...

Curious to see pics / designs, and hear what gear reduction you used.

I use a 4stroke water blaster motor with a “mate” post hole borer gearbox on it, the 25mm shaft easily accepts a Capstan drum

Nice and quiet and easily snaps 500kg sash cord at just above idle

It’s lifted many a deer 700m back up to the road. I have 3x rolls of cord at 250m per roll

    Very economical and quiet

A big thankyou to BRADS for the gearbox

Found this on YouTube last night.

Very clever - guys grafts a 1:31 worm gear onto a small chainsaw motor.

Yeah you could really tell when you had a good load on, the rope would start to sea saw.

I'm using this for my jetboat.

Might be worth seeing if you can replicate any specs? Or just copy 7mmsaums as that looks ideal

About 5 years back there was a Nz made one that bolted to a saw .It was a lot better made than what is available now. From memory it had a 3 ton single line pull.I can't find any links to it now pretty sure it was on trademe for a bit around that time.

The problem with running a winch off a chainsaw is the bloody noise, screaming away for ages while your trying to get a job done

4 stroke power is just so much quieter and more comfortable for everyone involved

Theres a local guy selling those old "mate" borer heads now all reconditioned and can made to fit any power head if you no anyone after one.

I have a pcw5000 and have picked up a lewis winch with a big saw engine off the ground and surprisingly it was no lighter but included the cable. If the mate gearbox proves sturdy long-term then 7mmsaums design is a winner. The going rate for a 2nd hand capstan pcw or simpson is 1.5k+ and they get snapped up fairly quick, Jet boat guys are looking to buy these new at the moment but there is supposedly no stock in the country.

If anyone has a simple design for a sturdy lightweight land anchor I'd be interested to see

I have used a lot of Waratahs as land anchors

Drive them in full length with a D shackle on the top of them

    Cheap easy and effective

This is the most simple solution I've come across. Have tried the anchor type but are hard work in rover
