one of the things to look out for is the colour temperature. most light in your home are about 3K and slightly yellow (warm white). 4K is really white (cold white) and then things get super startlingly white 6.5K which has a slight blue tinge.
the effects of super white light is that things appear brighter than what they are and its great for workshops and kitchens where you really need to see what you are doing in detail. the bad side is that its pretty hard on the eyes and brain matter.
same goes with car lights. put 6.5k light on and the first 1/2 hour its amazing. after that its so white its hard to focus long term. and if you hit snow or fog its like going blind
Another vote for stedi. You need to work out how you are mounting it on your hilux first before deciding what light. I think mine is a st4k maybe 12 or 14 inch which am more then happy with.
If you go to bright it’s hard to see cars lights coming towards you on back roads and to reflective on the big yellow signs
As above, or a mate of mine runs Lightfox if you want a cheaper version but still casts light a decent distance
I’ve got Hardkorr spotlights on my Ute, very happy with them and a bit cheaper than Stedi. They do light bars as well and all manner of other stuff. Could be worth a look for ya.
Available at Supercheap and other places if you look online.
I have a big ass Stedi lightbar on the roof of my boat and not real impressed with it to be honest doesn't really throw out an amazing amount of light of anything and the main lens has gone all cloudy after about 3 years and had moisture in behind it within about 12 months of mounting it. Boat is on a fresh water lake (Te Anau) so it's not exposed to harsh salt conditions or anything. Seems to be one of those brand like Yeti, they got their marketing right and every second person you see driving up the rangitata has a stedi lightbar and a yeti cooler on the back but there's much better brands that do the same or better job for less money. Have lightfox units on our quad bikes and my old farm navara and they've been bloody good they are constantly getting bashed about and covered in all manner of stuff, hosed down with high pressure hose daily etc and they have stayed water tight and perform well.

One thing with the super white bars, the backscatter on a rainy or night with lots of dust or pollen floating about is a major pain in the ringpiece. Might as well turn the lightbar off it gets that bad just with the particles reflecting bright spots back at ya. I'd second the warmer colour light bar if you can get it, it's OK going for blinding pricks in the next jurisdiction but I don't rate them. I'd rather a good useable spread of light out to the sides and down each corner than a metric f-ton of light going out into next week. Plus, the difference between lightbar and fullbeam and dipped lights can be a pretty bad issue if your dipped lights are not up to par.
Maybe consider fog or driving lights to pair with the low beam and increase the useable spread of light and then look at filling in the cracks in the high beam spread.
I bought a cheapie off trade me 8 years back for the pajero.
Worked very well and lasted.
It was maybe 125 down from 170 or something like that.
Very happy with it.

I went Stedi light bar with mounting and switch kit for my VW ute,
However I think if i did it again I would drop to the smaller one, went 31.5" but its too bright for everyday use,
definitly don't want to be blasting any on-comming driver. and yes I know it should not be used for on road.
Fine on long open roads were you can see on coming traffic a long way out, but not so good on the windy stuff i mostly drive on.

But no you have to have a single bar theoretically wired standalone but a pair are meant to be off the high beam.

Mine is wired into the High beam circuit but has a separate switch.
So for warrent time it is left turned off. When I want it, I turn it on and its on/off with the High beam.
Sometimes I will turn it off early when I see a car coming but may want to let it get a bit closer before taking High beam off.

I am big Narva light bar fan and have fitted 3 others to mates utes and they love them…
Also heard good things about stedi but not tried them
