light weight Sako stock build.... is it light enough yet?

Hi Guys. finally got some work done on a paulownia stock for a Sako Finnbear. in the past I have carbon wrapped a few, but it accepts resin so well I'm going to try 3 coats of resin and no carbon, so likely I'll walnut stain it... tho I think a charcoal stain would also be on option as the rifle has a stainless barrel so the traditional walnut and blued steel chaps wont string me up lol. anyway it currently weighs 430g and I estimate the resin will take it to 500g. In past builds I've hollowed the barrel channel and bored out the butt end. It's also been bedded already too. final sanding and minor shaping wont drop but 5g. so what do you think? 500g finished? or shall I attempt a 450g?

The manners ultra classic stocks are about 500grams which is very light. Great work

I probably wouldn't with any finished stock to be fair :yaeh am not durnk:

lol, not a show MSL. but I wouldnt with a mcmillian either. I also wouldnt try the first test with a nice walnut blank, not that it wouldnt hold up but that the risk is to high. This timber isnt titanium but for its weight it got remarkable grain strength

Yip its pretty tough alright, I can put my full weight on my fishing lures hanging off the swing, thats more the 2mm wire but they take a bloody beating for sure

Nice Scott, great to another Paulownia & CF stock coming together. I’m at more or less the same stage with the stock weighing in at 424g after final shaping & bedding done. The LimbSaver adds about 135g on its own. The 1st pic below is prior to final shaping with stock + pad weighing 575g.
Now at the fugly stage prior to cleaning up the epoxy & CF wrap.

its light enough bud...... too light and they become funky to shoot well....
3 coats of poly will indeed give it some strength,it will definately take up stain/colour from same very easily.
I was worried about strength for sling attachments,so bored two holes through butt sideways and glued two small sections of arrow shaft through and then used doubled paracord to attach rear of sling,did single length arrow shaft through forestock for same effect,figgured it will have to break it right out to let go VS strip a thread out.

the new airtech limbsaver is only 90gm...much better

That’s cool I removed the old limbsaver from my carbon wrapped diy one and replaced with foam mat and saved 130gm

great work chainsaw. man i hate the carbon stage... that's why Im skipping it in this build. just 3 coats of resin over stain. that's my thinking at present anyhow

Good Call Micky Duck. I just had my 2nd build fail on a stud because I didnt do this process. lesson learnt

True Spearonz, I thought the limbsaver too heavy too so I bought a $5 set of black jandals and 2 year later its holding up better than my standard tikka buttpads have lol. weighs nothing too

@Brian has done a couple and has finished them with a few coats of polyurethane. The thumbhole 223 that gets a lot of hard work is standing up very well to the rough and tumble. i'm impressed.
