Thread: Lightweight boots

who has experience going from a "normal" hunting boot, to something a bit lighter? (non-leather upper etc) I'm thinking of getting a lightweight hiking boot to use for those quick trips that are usually walk-in and don't necessitate the need for my heavier duty boots (La Spotiva Karakourum's)
Thinking of something along the lines of the following:

Have a pair Merrel 'running' shoes. They seem to work well for a quick couple hours walk

Well worth looking into them, just make sure you use the good boots when you need the ankle support

Can't help but I heard the Salomon 4d Quest are the best up that alley.. Looks like youd be able to jog in in them

Think thats what @Alonzo has and they look super comfy and light

I have Merrel Moab Ventilator. Light, and soft. Not Gortex or anything so your feet get wet even in wet grass but great if crossing lots of streams where you will get wet feet anyway. They dry really quickly.

Wrong size I know but this is them.

Ankle support is the main criteria with a boot (in my eye)
I stumbled upon a pair of near new Stoney Creek Rusa boots - all the forum reports said they were crap etc - but after wearing out pair #2 I luckily found another pair that were new.
They are like slippers on - light as a feather - but I am presuming not strong enough for bigger guys.
Hard to go back to my Lowa or Scarpa after them - but the Rusa wouldn't stand up in Fiordland or the likes for any peiod of time I imagine?

I am bring in "used" boots from East Europe now.
Have 3 pairs on TM at moment

I rate the Salomon Quest type. I run a pair of mid high ones and find them a great boot for day hunts where you're not carrying a heavy pack

I use these all summer and into the winter until the mud comes over the top of them. Contrary to popular belief the low cut is good for your ankles because they strengthen them. It has mine. I use low puttees because the stones and shit get into them easily.

If they not strengthen they will break :-))

No - seriously - I suppose if your hold the ankle tight and secure it will weaken - but if it has to support then it will strengthen.

He's ex mil and avid hunter, has all sorts of boots but reckon these are the best, apparently a lot of the regiment guys are starting to use them.

The combined age of my ankles is 138

My ankles are certainly stronger since I started wearing the lower cut walking shoes in the hills.
